Loved this recipe! I looked all over for black mustard seeds but I only found brown. Is that the same thing? It tasted great!

Thank you thank you thank you, Aarti!!! I made this and LOVED it! It tasted just like something out of my friend, Rachana's kitchen (she is from India. I skipped the serrano and black mustard seeds since I can't find them around here. I also chose not to use the oil to bloom the spices (I'm on a diet...let me tell you something...YUM! You really wouldn't miss them :-

I made this recipe last night with Aarti's Hot Dogs a la Rose and it was absolutely delicious! My husband and I always enjoy eating lentils, but this is the first time I have ever cooked with red lentils. The lentils took about 35 minutes to be really soft and you definitely have to add salt to taste. I was nervous about the tempering oil at the end, but it worked out fine. The flavors came together beautifully. Only next time I will have to double the recipe.

I really would give it 4.5 stars because to me it's not a WOW flavor. But it is very tasty (tasty enough I will make it often and my favorite part is it's so easy. One thing that would add to the wow factor, but definitely add to the time involved would be to brown the onions before adding the other ingredients (many Indian recipes call for this step. I have a feeling this will be excellent as left-overs! Thanks Aarti :

LOVED THIS!! So delish and goes great with Aarti's Sloppy Bombay Joes. I agree they could have cooked a little longer than the 40 min, but next time (and there WILL be a next time I'll cook it longer. Also def needed a lot more salt than I expected. Overall pretty darn easy to make and pretty darn tasty. Keep up the good work Aarti!

All I can say to sum it up....WOW. I have been looking for years for a great 'go to' lentil recipe and this is it! The only small problem I have is that I have to double the recipe because I need MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Absolutely delicious! I made one change--a longer cooking time before the spiced oil is added. At around 1 1/2 hours is when the magic begins to happen (or all day on low in the crock pot. Give it time and the whole will be greater than the sum of its parts. It's just getting started with the 30-40 minutes that the recipe recommends--you can still see the separate ingredients floating happily in the pot. But give it a little more time and it takes on a whole new identity. It becomes a thick, golden, aromatic stew with a porridge-like consistency. This is going to be a staple in my repetoire of recipes. Look out Rose, there's a new "mum" in town now--me. Thanks for sharing your family favorites, Aarti!

OH MY GOODNESS...OH MY GOODNESS! Delish! I would ease off a bit on the cumin, but that is just personal. I put in a bit more ginger on accident...but LOVE ginger! Mixing left overs with rice for my lunch tomorrow. All 3 of my kids enjoyed it too!
