I did make some changes to the recipe as some others have. I used chicken stock instead of water (low sodium and used fresh limes to garnish. The zip of the citrus really perks it up! Keep up the great stuff Aarti!

This is one of the best lentil stews I've ever tried. PACKED full of spices and flavor, I will definitely make this again and again! It's a great vegetarian dish that is not lacking. I added more garlic, ginger, spices, thai chilies instead, canned garden tomatoes, and it turned out wonderful. YUM!!!
To cut down on cook time, I also used split red lentils. Another affordable dish to make! Spice lovers rejoice.

Delicious! Go Aarti! I really like to blend this up for a soupier texture, plus then you can feed it to picky eaters without having them go, "Eew, lentil soup?"

Really nice recipe! I like lentils (but am not a huge curry fan - but my partner loves curry despite not liking lentils. This recipe pleased both of us.
This dish was super easy, flavorful, healthy, frugal and made great lunch leftovers. I doubled the recipe and added 13 oz of browned ground lean chicken halfway through. I also used a 28 oz can of diced tomatoes as I didn't have any fresh.

This is sooooo good! As a few reviewers suggested, I sauteed the onion, pepper, garlic, and ginger before following the remainder of the recipe. My husband and five year old loved it. I can't wait to have the leftovers tomorrow, since so many said it is better the next day!

I am so glad Aarti won! I've been dying to try some of her recipes and chose this one to make first despite the fact that I NEVER had a Dal that I liked....before now anyway. This one was fantastic and I love the fact that it is such a healthy recipe and so easy to make. I will be making this again. I made some substitutions to fit what I had in the house. I used ginger paste (seriously if you don't have this BUY it at any Asian or Middle Eastern grocery store..its so much easier and has a long shelf life cumin powder instead of seeds (used less since it was powder of course, and a combo of red pepper flakes and cayenne pepper (powder instead of the chili. YUM! DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THIS RECIPE DOUBLES WELL? I would love to bring this to a party.

I've made this several times and everyone I've served it to loves it! So easy to make. I didn't have time to soak the lentils one night, so I just rinsed them and cooked with a cover to speed up the cooking process. They were done in about a half hour. Also, our grocery store seems to frequently be out of serranos. If you can't get one, I've substituted chili powder and a little cayenne and it seems to work well.

I had never even heard of red lentils until I stumbled onto
Aarti's episode. This was delicious and easy. I altered it slightly by using fennel seeds instead of cumin because I had mistakenly written down the wrong ingredient. It came out very tasty nonetheless.

OMG, this recipe was FABULOUS!!!! I have never cooked lentil soup before. I was searching for a high protein type soup without meat. This popped up and it had 5 stars so I read through the reviews and I got excited to make it. Wow, wow, wow, normally I need help eating a recipe I make. Well this one I will not SHARE LOL. I did share the recipe with all my foodie friends.
