Forget the barbecue! This recipe has amazing flavor! I didn't have cannelini beans or tomato paste but subbed two large cans of Bush's original beans which I drained. Otherwise, I followed the recipe exactly. Usually I add about a half a pound of cooked ground beef to my baked beans, but these beans are SO flavorful, I skipped the meat.

Made these beans for my card group. The house smelled divine. The only change I made was I used ginger from a spice bottle rather than fresh. They were delicious. A totally different taste than my usual baked beans with catsup, brown sugar, bacon, etc. A warm spicy flavor. 4 people ate almost all of this recipe. I will say they were not good left over. This recipe is worth making for the smell alone.

I love beans and love Indian flavors, so made this exactly as written, but have to agree with Cookin KC -- I could taste the various flavors, but they just didn't seem to work together. The end result was just okay. I have several of Aarti's recipes in regular rotation, but this just won't be one of them for our house.

The flavors in these beans never blended. I gave it 2 stars because the recipe does include bacon which was the best part!

WAAAAY too sweet for my taste. I don't like regular sweet baked beans and somehow thought the Indian spices would work for me. I would not make this again, sorry!

The flavor of these beans is fantastic, my husband and I both really enjoyed them. I've made them twice now, and actually forgot the mustard the second time, and we couldn't tell, so maybe it's not essential. Also, I bought some Garam Masala, but the cardamom was prohibitively expensive here and was only available ground, no pods to be found in the Louisville, KY area, so left that out altogether.
I'm a bit annoyed that the proportions listed in the recipe don't match what Aarti used on her show; for example she used 2 bottles of root beer, not one, and she used a lot more molasses and apple cider vinegar than the recipe calls for, so, SO DID I!
For 4 cans of white northern beans, or cannelini (I've tried both, I used 24 oz. of diet root beer (maybe that makes up for the molasses, at least 1/4 cup of vinegar and molasses, and actually added more molasses later in the process, as well as more root beer.

I loved the baked beans and so did my parents, my brother doesn't like ginger so he didn't like them. I am a vegitarian so I left out the bacon and used a few drops of liquid smoke when adding the beans instead. They had an even better flavor on the next day.

I made the beans for a small Labor Day gathering and even my picky sister-in-law had seconds. I love Indian food so I took a chance and doubled the garam masala to make sure I could taste it and they raved about the new twist on our usual boringly sweet baked beans.

Made this for Labor Day party and it was the favorite. The flavor was perfect...no need to "doctor" it up. Next time I'll be doubling it! Thanks, Aarti!
