This recipe is not for the average cook for sure. My custard did not set properly and egg mixture cook time was more than the recipe called for. I believe next time Ill use less milk than what instructed. Otherwise I like Alex's recipes, this one was not one of my faves:(

Loved it. Had no problems like others. The only thing I didn't do was use the liqueur.

I totally agree with the other reviewer. Firstly, the gelatin turned into one hard lump. Not knowing what to do, I added some warm water to it.
Nextly, just as the other poster said, the custard never set. Get this, I even hurridly, dumped it in a saucepan and turned it in med.high to try and thicken it, stirring constantly. It thickened slightly, only.
Then I chilled it and it thickened. . . barely. I finished the rest of the recipe, cut the lady fingers, poured it into the springform pan.
The problem with this recipe is its instructions. Saying 3-5 min. to get "custardlike" isn't enough. Custard can be really thick or slightly thin, but when it's supposed to really be able to stand up in the springform pan, that's a different story altogether.

This recipe was a disaster from start to finish. The egg yolk custard didn't thicken properly and as a result I had tiny bits of cooked egg yolks in the custard. The taste is bland and not very chocolaty. The whole gelatin thing was a mess. I ended up throwing the whole thing away -- what a waste of 8 egg yolks. Very disappointing.

my gelatin also hardened before it was supposed to be used. I followed the directions exactly, and thanks to that, when i poured it into the springform pan it leaked out. also the custard mix never became custard. this recipe is poorly put together.

I too followed the recipe. The gelatin should not go first. Mine also hardened and I had to nuke it. Sitting here not knowing if I am in a dessert 911 for Xmas or not. It will be a long time before I try another Alex recipe. So disappointing.

I followed the directions step by step, and have been waiting over an hour for the custard to set. Something is definitely wrong with this recipe and it should be corrected before anyone else wastes 8 egg yolks on this one. Can you please tell us when we should use the gelatin, because it is apparent it should not be the 1st step.

This recipe did not deliver! All steps took much longer than stated and there were problems with every step! Even the flavor was disappointing. Skip this one!

Didn't turn out quite like the photo in the FN Magazine. Followed directions carefully and exactly. The gelatin coagulated into a stiff mass which I had to break up and incorporate into the mixture with electric mixer. Took longer to begin setting, more like 2 1/2 hrs instead of the 1 hour suggested by the recipe. Overall, the dessert turned out beautifully, tasted fantastic if you like chocolate mousse; it just didn't look as dense as portrayed in the photo. I will make this again.
