I was hoping for a knockout version of my favorite comfort sweet and was a bit disappointed. The cake was fluffy which some may not like, but was my favorite part of the dessert. The miss in this recipe was the overkill on the salt! Each member of my family tried to eat a piece, but couldn't get past the first bite due the heavy salt intake. I also think a 9x13pan was way too big. Cake was too flat against the topping. A lot of work for pour results.

True the recipe isn't Guarnaschelli's, but it turned out okay once I accepted the fact she didn't reveal the actual recipe, and I kept it in the oven for about 45-50min. I even tried to find a glass pie plate to minimize errors. As for the cake itself, I noticed it was incredibly moist and flavorful. Like the others have mentioned, definitely not custard-like or even golden brown like the one that magically appeared for Guarnaschelli and her friends. Sadly.

I haven't tested this recipe yet, but like most other reviewers the recipe seems very different than what Alex made on the show. Alex's cake appeared almost pudding-like, as opposed to your average sour cream coffee cake, which what this recipe really is. Maybe it was because she baked it in a glass pie pan, instead of a metal cake pan? Alex, if you or your assistant's ever read these comments, care to chime in? I'm still giving it four stars since it's a sour cream coffee cake with a crunchy topping...yum!

This definetly wasn't the cake Alex made. Dissapointing because half the fun in making these recipes from this particular show is tasting what these professionals love best. Well, it was okay. I didn't like that the topping fell off so easily. I will try it again because it was pretty easy and next time I will try swirling half the topping around the cake and then topping the rest and pressing down a little before baking.

AMAZING! The key is slow. As recommended, I let the stand-mixer cream the butter for at least 6 or 7 minutes while I puttered and mixed other things. I do agree the teaspoon of salt may be a bit too much for the topping - IF you are using salted butter. I think its the best coffee cake that has ever come out of my kitchen. Wonderful for a lazy morning...

I was a bit disappointed at first that it wasn't like the cake on the show but I quickly got over it. This is a fantastic recipe. I used gluten free flour and added a bag of frozen cranberries. Perfect! My search for a great coffee cake recipe is now over. It did take almost an hour though to bake, and the house smelled amazing!

I also agree that this was not the same recipe she had on the show. I was so looking forward to the dense texture that the Coffee Cake appeared to have on the show. My whole family was disappointed with it. Even tried cooking one a little under done and it just tasted like raw dough. This will make it hard to trust any of Alex's recipes again. Mediocre at best.

Made it for Thanksgiving breakfast and we loved it!!!!! I know it didn't look like the show's density, but the sweet/salty mixture was fantastic. So moist and crunchy topping. I used a springform pan & it was done in 30 min., but check with a toothpick.
thanks Alex! Will be using this for holidays & company!

I agree that this was not the cake that Alex made on the show. The one on the show was in a pie plate and more dense. The cake itself was good but topping tasted too salty. Next time I will either omit the salt or use unsalted butter.

Made this coffeecake and it is wonderful. It is so moist, not overly sweet. Only thing is, it looked nothing like what was shown. I agree with another her's looked like a pecan base pie, mine? It looked like a coffeecake. Will for sure make it again!.
