Ingredients

Filling:

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 6 tart apples, cored, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Crust:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups shortening
  • About 1/4 cup cold water

Directions

For the filling: mix the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg with apples and set aside.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

For the crust: mix the flour and salt with the shortening until crumbly. Add cold water and knead. Roll out 1/2 of the dough and place in an 8-inch pie tin. Cut off extra dough from around the edges. Poke with fork to prevent air bubbles.

Place the apple mixture in the aluminum on top of the dough. Roll out the other 1/2 of the dough and place on top of the apples. Pinch dough around the edges to seal it. Poke the top of the pie with a fork gently. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake in preheated oven for 50 minutes to 1 hour.

Unfortunately I didn't add in that tablespoon of butter when I made the filling, because the first step forgot to include it...the pie still tasted great, but remember that butter(:

Aside from using a different crust recipe, I have my 7 year old niece (that's right.....SHE'S 7!! making this pie all by herself. i personally prefer to add a little bit of salt (a bit too sweet for me but otherwise i pick up crust at the store for my niece and let her take over the kitchen....
