My husband asked me to try this for his birthday because we were curious. We were not impressed. The frosting looked more like the slime from a Nickelodeon show than frosting. And, the taste - well, it tasted like avocado with sugar on it. We won't try this again, but all our friends sure are getting a kick out of us trying to make frosting with avocados!

I made this to go with a pumpkin cake for my son's first birthday party. It worked taste wise really well, but in looks it was really strange. The consistency wasn't the same as normal icing, so I wouldn't suggest cutting back on the sugar. I tried cutting out some of the sugar and it came out as goo, which (by the way would work really well as a fruit dip. People who didn't know first what they were eating, didn't even know it was avocado that it was made from.

Like others, I was intrigued by this and like others, I was surprised to find that this was really pretty tasty. We put it on carrot cake in place of cream cheese frosting and it was good with the spicy cake. I'd make it again sometime.

Oh, and for Anonymous, while you may imagine yourself a "highly good chef", Avocado is classified as a fruit. http://www.avocado.org/about/fun_facts.php

    (and
just as a FYI, "viscous" is not spelled "ficasious"! LOL

The color is perfect for a kids cake. Its kinda ghosbusters green. My husband made it for my birthday and he's very precise w/ recipes. Next time we make it we will cut back on the sugar and increase the lemon. It was a bit too sweet w/ not much avocado flavor.

I used this recipe for my sons 5th birthday cake. It worked out great and looked just like slime. I didn't tell the kids it was made from a veggie. They loved it. I made me feel good that even though the fosting is high in sugar the fats where from avocado instead of butter. Thanks Alton for another great recipe. You are the best.

I always love Alton Brown's recipes when they deviate significantly from the classics, but this is one of the best. I was shocked when it actually turned out with the right consistency (I didn't see the episode where he made it himself, and I was delighted when it tasted great. Seven of my friends also tried it and their opinions ranged from "hmm.... it's pretty good" to "this is fantastic!"
I will definitely make it again!

I made this just to see what it tastes like. Kind of a sweet woody taste with a vague, but hard to identify, avacado taste. I frosted a cake with it an sent it to work with my wife. Everybody liked it but couldent place what the strange taste was till she told them. I think its more useful for messing with folks than as a frosting.

The color was a little off-putting, but I used it on an Easter cake, so I had an excuse for it to be green. Faint avacado taste goes well with the lemon

Okay, it looked a little weird...but it tasted great. Super creamy. My husband stared at it slightly quizzically, but her loved the taste.

I added orange extract instead of lemon because it was what I had in the house, and I didn't sift all of the sugar, and it still turned out ok. I haven't put it on a cake yet, but am thinking a lemon or orange cake. The flavor comes mostly from the lemon and the extract. The avacado seems to provide the creamy vehicle for the sugar, and the color, and that's about it. It is easy, and tastes fine.
The only problem is that the color is off-putting. Share it with your more adventurous friends.
