This is the basic recipe for banana pudding that my dad made all the time. As an adult, I was shocked (not embellishing to hear that people actually made banana pudding with instant pudding. I'm glad to be from South Carolina and very happy to have learned to cook from scratch, using my dad's Old Dutch Cookbook along with his advice. This guy may have grown up very poor, but we have never gone hungry (dad was 43 when I was born and he grew up during the depression. Come to my house and you'll always be welcomed with sweet tea or coffee and something to eat. Real banana pudding is so easy and so good. Friends and family are well worth serving this to.

When I saw it on the show, I thought it looked absolutely delicious. I tried it, and even with store bought vanilla wafers (yes, for shame, I know it was absolutely delicious.

This is a tasty dessert and is easy to make, but I found the bananas to be too tart. Next time, I will omit the lemon juice and just cut up one banana at a time as I go.

This was the best banana pudding that I've ever tasted. I made it for my weekend guess and it went over so well that I will use it again and again. The pudding came out so smooth and I loved the banana liquor over the vanilla wafers...simply a wonderful taste.

I cooked according to recipe and it turned out wonderful! I loved the whipped cream...it's was light and fluffy.

    Thanks, Alton

This one get five stars from me and my family!!

I've made countless dishes from AB's recipes, nearly all with spectacular results. This one exceeded my already high expectations. I'm a midwesterner who's lived in the South for the last ten years. I grew up with whipped cream, but I wanted to try the baked and went ahead and tried the meringue. Glad I did. Have no intention of even trying the refrigerated version now.

Oh, and you aren't going to chicken out and use store bought vanilla wafers, are you? They make all the difference in the world. You wouldn't think they would be that much better, but that's the point. They truly are.

I agree with CW; it has to have meringue; couldn't believe it the first time I was served it with - whipped cream?! - now way - this is great!

Banana pudding has to have a real meringue to be truly Southern. There is nothing like the browned merigne and warm bananas to say comfort food at its best. And meringue is much lower in calories than whipped cream...

Memories of a South Georgia childhood are brought back with this recipe!!

    Thanks!!!

Not hard to find. Just go to the "search term box" type in "good eats" then enter the dates from whatever date you think you saw the show to an ending date, and hurray... there all three recipes are. Ending with a preposition... yes I know.

Love the show. I learn so much from Alton and I've been cooking for over 55 years. Just goes to show that old dogs can learn new tricks.
