I have made baked WHITE rice for years but we like brown rice better. I am a VERY competant cook but just couldn't make good brown rice. Then one day I thought hmmmmm can ya bake brown rice? Leave it to Alton Brown to have a recipe that works PERFECTLY EVERY TIME! Yes, they are many of us who find this super exciting. I also add things to this recipe so sometimes it's really a casserole but i make at least one dish of plain brown rice (with 1/2 chicken, veggie or beef broth almost every week. I don't know if alton came up with this himself or not but whoever did they are a super star in my house, Oh, and WE ALL LOVE ALTON BROWN :~

This is easy and makes a perfect batch of brown rice. I used an non-stick brownie pan, but it works just as well as a glass one would have I'm sure.

I agree with everyone here that gave Alton's recipe 5 stars. I cooked it in a 2 1/2 quart enameled cast iron pot with cover. Perfect in one hour. I bet it gets really hot in there!

This is an amazing recipe! or as one might say, "fool proof"!
I made a double batch .I added cooked chicken cubes (used the broth instead of water added green peas, cooked chopped carrots and a little dried dill to the dry rice . mixed the chicken broth with a 3 chopped olives,2 cloves of garlic,1/4 C crushed tomatoes, touch of tomato paste, saffron ,salt, black pepper, garlic powder,1 tbs butter and 1 tbs EVOO .
There is no limit to what you can do with this recipe. My add ins might sound like a lot but I was following my middleeastern senses and this is where I was taken! the rice was perfectly cooked ,the grains where seperate from one another ,no mushiness or stickiness in sight! Unlike that one time when I made brown rice pudding without intending to or the other time when I made the brown rice mush into soup ,had some and hid it from my husband!you know how it is! or maybe not! haha .anywho if you're still following me! don't hesitate to try this recipe, use your instincts and creativity and you shall not be sorry! happy cooking!

I have been trying to eat healthier but don't like brown rice at all. However cooking it this way, it tasted fabulous! I used chicken broth instead of water, and added garlic and 1.5 cups os frozen peas (to the broth when I boiled it. I used the lid that came with my pyrex dish instead of foil and it worked out fine. Even the kids (picky teenagers who HATE healthiness loved it. I also tried Naomi's breakfast recipe with the leftovers, and it was great! Thanks Alton (and Naomi!

I thought this recipe was very easy and I'm so happy I can finally make brown rice without having to check on it and keep adding more water. Next tme I'm going to try this with 1 tbsp. olive oil instead of the butter and see if it come out as good.

The only change I made was to cook this in my Dutch oven. I don't use aluminum foil (or pans so the Dutch oven works just fine. Plus it keeps the rice nice and warm for a while.
Great basic recipe that can be modified as you wish.

I Can't Cook Rice To Save My Life But I Did This And It Turned Out Perfect...I Don't Know I Guess It Could Be Because It Was Baked And Not Boiled On The Stove Top....But Yeah Really Good About 20 Mins In I Put Some Seasoned Chicken Wings Into It And Once It Was Done Added Garlic Herbs A Pinch Or Sea Salt And Some Pepper....5 Stars In My Book.
