I made this yesterday for dinner last night and it was wonderful I took the advice of some others and added half an onion and a sprig of rosemary, and I went with 3/4 cup medium pearled barley. Toward the end of the cooking, I added about 1/2 cup of red wine. Of course, I ended up cooking the dish a lot longer than indicated because my husband was busy playing Assassin's Creed and I was on the phone, and then our next door neighbors dropped by...but it didn't hurt the dish at all. The lamb was incredibly tender and not as "lamby" as lamb chops are. My husband was still raving about it this morning.

I would highly recommend this. Shared it on FB! I added an onion with the carrots, and crushed garlic and rosemary with the broth. Everything else was as is. FANTASTIC. I wanted to eat the entire pot.

We have made this several times, just as the recipe is and one time with rice instead of barley, because that is what we had. It is fantastic.

This is so good and easy and delicious, I can't believe more people have not tried it. I didn't have barley grits so I used pearled barley and forgot to but the fresh oregano but it was delicious all the same. I could not find lamb shoulder so a nice employee at the meat counter cut the bone out of a leg of lamb for me. This meal is so flavorful and easy to make, my husband and I are in love with this recipe. If you are thinking about trying it, go full steam ahead, you will love it! Thanks Alton:

I could not find barley grits anywhere, so used pearl barley (which I love. I also added a little sauted onion, celery and garlic. I thought this was great on a cold snowy day and a nice change. I think people who don't usually like lamb would like this.

mmmmmm... comfort stew on a cold day can't be beat. I replaced the carrots with parsnips but only because I was out of carrots. It turned out really good. This stew is simple to make, tastes good, and is economical. I think I'll try it in the crock pot next time like some others have suggested.

I have a very difficult time getting all three of my children on the same page for dinner. I was so pleasantly surprised at the ease and taste of this recipe! All 3 got seconds, now thats a first!

I've made this three times. Fantastic! The flour coating is not necessary. Make sure lamb is trimmed as the stew becomes a bit cloying with more than just a hint of fat.

I made this recipe using a generous sprig of fresh rosemary instead of oregano and cooked it for the duration rather than putting it in at the last minute. Also, after bringing all ingrediants to a boil on the stovetop, I transferred itto a crockpot -excellent results! I absolutely love the simplicity, heartiness, and flavor of this meal!!

Outstanding . . . the oregano is a MUST for this delicious stew. Easy to make. Might try it in the crock pot next time.
