I can tell this would have been really really good but I did not cook the green beans long enough, bummer! I really liked the taste of it and the onions, I also messed that up because I chopped the onions instead of slicing them. I still follwed the direction for it and they were very good.

    Thanks, Tina

This is a great recipe, but I don't have enough oven space. Next time I'll either deep fry the onions or do them before my turkey. Actually, I think I'll cook the whole thing the day before and re-heat it in the microwave. (I won't cook the beans all the way though to allow for the extra cooking.

I made for thanksgiving and everyone absolutely loved it! Will definitely make again and again. I too had problems with the onions and just ended up using the canned ones.

I made this casserole yesterday for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it. I made a few slight changes to the recipe. First, I cooked the green beans a little longer because I know my mother doesn't like the green beans firm. Second, I used the canned onions because the turkey was in the oven and I didn't want to wait for the turkey to come out to cook the onions. I doubled the recipe and it seemed like there were too many mushrooms, although my family loves mushrooms there were too many for my liking. The sauce was perfect. I didn't make it in the cast iron skillet because it would have overflowed in the oven, so I used a pampered chef casserole/ roasting pan and it worked out great. It was excellent the next day. I give it a two thumbs up and a five star rating. I'll never use the canned recipe again. Thanks Alton.

My onion experience was the same as some others - burned up quickly so I resorted to the canned onions & it was fine.

Otherwise,I thought the recipe was easy& very good & I used my iron skillet to prepare it...but the next time I will transfer it to a dish to serve it in before I put it in the oven as the black skillet looked out of place on the table with the holiday dish & glassware....

I really enjoyed this recipe and so did my guest on Thanksgiving. I prepared the onions and blanched the green beans the day before the big event. When making the onions I burned the first batch at the higher temp and turned it down to 400 degrees as another reviewer suggested and they turned out perfect. It's a great recipe and I feel much better knowing that I made it without using the condensed soup or canned veggies.

I love Alton Brown's recipes and this is no exception! It's EASY to prepare and it's quite possibly the BEST green bean casserole ever. I cannot tolerate MSG, so I always look for "from scratch" recipes for my Holiday family favorites.Even my Mother-in-Law was impressed. Thanks Alton!

I love it when recipe is easy to follow, but the final product is so impressive that people "oooh" and "aaah" throughout the entire meal. The step by step process was helpful and the smells and tastes were incredible.

I increased the recipe to feed 35 and everyone loved it. I'll never think of using canned or bagged ingredients for this dish - a total success.

I made these last night for Thanksgiving and they were a huge success! Minus the mushrooms since I "the cook" do not like them...ha ha. Followed everything to the tee in directions but I did just like the guy below me and watch for color when it came to the onions since I like them a little more brown. It is a common sense thing too because you know how you love your veggies. Presentation: Easy, just like Alton states.
Results: OMG! Truly the best green bean casserole ever. I had a total of 5 people here including my mother and they were all blown away. My husband who compares things to his mother's cooking even said it blew him away and to make it again for Christmas.
So, thank you Alton! New family holiday food tradition in this house!

I had similar issues as the other reviewers with the onions. I think the key is to keep a close eye on them as they cook and not just have faith in the instructions. Back in my pizza cook days, we never timed pizzas. We'd watch them for color, knowing that golden brown meant done. I would apply the same logic to the onions. I would also recommend dropping the oven temperature to 400 as 'T' mentions in his/her review. Just keep an eye on them. Or, if you're into the canned onions, by all means use those instead.

As for the flavor, this is 'the best green bean casserole EVAH' according to my wife. The beans come out slightly crisp, and the flavors of the ingredients all blend quite well together.

I'm happy to report that I introduced my newly expanded family to this casserole during Thanksgiving 2008, and it was a resounding success. They are used to the recipe one finds on the back of a soup can, and this one blew them away.

Incidentally, it mixes very well on the plate with your stuffing, gravy, turkey, potatoes, etc....

My only 'knock' on this dish is that it's slightly more fussy than the difficulty rating suggests. I had no issue with getting the dish right (after scorching one batch of onions, but this one is probably more of an 'internediate' difficulty (in my humble opinion.

    Great dish
