Has anyone started this a few days before it's to be served? I've blanched the beans and baked the onions - two days before Thanksgiving. Thought it might save some time, pots and pans since there are other dishes to prepare that day. I'm leaving the beans whole rather than breaking them in half.

Overall, it was tasty, but not worth the effort. Took well over an hour to prepare and the sauce barely thickened. I know this recipe is a fresh take on the classic, but I will definitely stick with the cream of mushroom soup and french fried onion rings next time.

This was excellent when we made it last year. The onion topping was so good that i make it from time to time to put on top of other side dishes and/or steaks. Sometimes i add cayenne powder for some added kick.

This was a really nice alternative to the canned green bean casserole I'm using to seeing on the table. It was easy to follow and the prep was worth it, knowing the ingredients were fresh (and organic. I subbed veggie stock for chicken stock (I'm vegetarian and it still tasted great. The onions were tricky and I definitely had to pick through and toss out some of the burned pieces, so next time I may try one of the reviewer's suggestions to slice the onions a little thicker and/or check and rotate them more often. Will make again!

I'm docking two stars due to the utter failure that the onions turned out to be, even though I followed the recipe to a T. About 65% of them stuck to the bottom of my pan(even though I did coat it with cooking spray and the rest where burnt or a gluey mess. I ended up just buying the already made stuff and used them instead. The green bean filling was pretty good, although it felt a bit one-dimensional to me. Maybe adding more garlic might help it out, and perhaps a bit of parmesan. I will definitely make this recipe again, but with the noted adjustments.

Not only have I made this more than once but I no longer use the other soup to make anything. I use the last half to make all kinds of cream soups. Thank you Alton!!

Best Ever is Right. I took this to a New Years Eve party as a side dish. There were plenty of terrific hor'dourves there and this casserole was such a hit. It was gone in no time. There were no leftovers to take home!

A couple of years ago, I was assigned green bean casserole for the family holiday pot luck. I lamented the assignment as I had never made it before and hate cooking from cans. My husband suggested I see if Alton Brown had recipe, and lo and behold I found this. It is pretty labor intensive, but apparently worth it, as I now seem permanently assigned to bring this dish. My husband loves for me to make it at home too! So I give it only four stars because I've become the permanent green bean casserole source!
