Directions are easy to follow, and the flavor is great. Would have gone with five stars, but it IS a lot of work, when buying all the canned stuff is a cinch. I had the opposite problem with the onions, b/c the turkey was in the oven at 350. They wouldn't crisp up at all. Finally the turkey was done, and I cranked up the temp, and they finally came around. I used 1.5 lb of fresh green beans, 8oz of white mushrooms, 8oz of cremini, two onions. Raw, it looked like it would never fit in the 2qt dish, but after everything cooked down, it fit perfectly. Next time, just to avoid having 2 cooks in the kitchen, I would boil the beans and make the sauce ahead of time. Then, the day of, I'd make the onions and put it all together in the casserole and bake. Overall, I'm very pleased with how they turned out.

This was the most amazing green bean casserole i've ever had. I'm an aspiring chef so when my favorite chef alton made this dish i new exactly what i was bringing to christmas dinner. the onions were tricky, yes, but just keep a careful eye on them (i flipped every 8 minutes and used a mandolin to keep them uniform. Alton of course has brought out another excellent dish that my family loved. We all ate our veggies this christmas!!! Thanks Alton!!!

I was so excited to try this recipe. I actually really like the "original" version of green bean casserole with the canned soup. I just hate the ingredients in the soup though. This was really easy and tasted very good! We did not make the onions as others suggested they just didn't turn out, I didn't want to go to the trouble. We used canned green beans (2 cans too only because I wasn't confident in preparing fresh. When I have had them in the past they were always crunchy. Anyway, the soup base in this was just perfect and was just what we were looking for. Thanks Alton!

I made this recipe for the first time for Thanksgiving and the only deviation I made was that I used the canned fried onions instead of making my own. Next time I cook it I'm going to cook the green beans a little longer but other than that it was perfect. And the leftovers were even better in my opinion. Simply delicious, I'll never go back to making the canned soup version again.

I love this dish. It's a tune up on an old fave. People dig that you;ve made your own sauce and onion rings.

...it is green bean casserole! Alton is trying to mimic the flavor of the "classic" canned cream of mushroom soup with fresh ingredients. Why not change it up and make it your own. Fresh tarragon would be great in this. The onions were simply okay; make sure to flip them often and keep them together to prevent burning.

This was the BEST green bean casserole I've ever had. It was the hit during Thanksgiving and everyone's favorite dish. Definitely one to have throughout the year.

Note: the recipe also works out great as a vegan dish using soy creamer instead of half-and-half and non-transfat margarine instead of butter.

making your own french onions is a bit over the top in my opinion. I live in a very small town and could not find panko breadcrumbs. Our Wally World didn't even have them...and yes we have a Wally World....I tried using regular bread crumbs and they were not good. I sent my son to the local Piggly Wiggly for the canned ones and they were great. The cream of mushroom soup that I made for this was absolutely dreamy and using fresh green beans is now a must. I will never used canned ones again!

We tried this recipe at Thanksgiving this year and it truly is the best green bean casserole I've ever eaten. I love the big chunks of mushrooms and fresh green beans, I'm never going backed to canned again.

My only complaint is there didn't seem to be enough of the onions - easily fixed, though, we're just going to make more next time!
