A couple of years ago, I was assigned green bean casserole for the family holiday pot luck. I lamented the assignment as I had never made it before and hate cooking from cans. My husband suggested I see if Alton Brown had recipe, and lo and behold I found this. It is pretty labor intensive, but apparently worth it, as I now seem permanently assigned to bring this dish. My husband loves for me to make it at home too! So I give it only four stars because I've become the permanent green bean casserole source!

Very delicious but could not get the sauce to thicken!

I hate green beans and almost anything that comes from a can. This recipe is excellent, absolutely delicious!! I add 1/4 cup more cream though then reduce it to half; which means bringing the broth & cream to a boil for several minutes (stirring constantly then simmering for a good 20 mins (stirring every min or two.

This is my favorite holiday dish. I make it every Christmas and Thanksgiving. I always change up the types of mushrooms and it's delicious every time. The only thing I can't seem to get right is the onions. I have tried them twice and both times they turned out awful. I know it's me and not the recipe but can't figure out how to get them just right. I'm gonna try again this year.

The name says it all. Best ever. And as Alton pointed out, take your time with the onions! You can use the can stuff, I have, it is okay, but the homemade onions make it fabulous. Also, making the mushroom sauce for other casseroles makes a great mix. Did a classic bread and butter bottom, with various lightly steamed veggies and the sauce on top. Came out wonderfully. Love the nutmeg, and of course love you Alton <3

I absolutely HATE green bean casserols made with canned green beans and canned mushroom soup. I think it tastes like dog food smells! With that being said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE this recipe and won't have green bean casserole any other way. I love taking this as a side to potlucks and cook outs to see people's reactions when they have "real" green bean casserole. Thanks Alton!

Ummm. What a great recipe! I added a few drops of hot sauce to make my sauce have a little punch. I also added mini lima beans to add to the overall creamy texture. This green bean casserole receives two thumbs up!! Thanks

Have to admit, I was a little skeptical. How good can green bean casserole be? Oh, it can be GREAT!!! Everyone HAD to have the recipe. It is tricky not to burn the onion topping. I'm going to try a lower oven temperature next time. (But I have a feeling I'm going to have a LOT of practice making this recipe!
