So tasty and easy to do! I loved it more because it didn't call for processed canned soup. Watch your onions closely though, they burn easily. Loved it!

This was fantastic for sure, everyone said it was indeed the best green bean casserole they've ever had. But like other readers, I struggled with the onions. first batch totally fried. second batch I did convection at 425, flipped onions after 15 minutes, lowered to 400 (still convection and then flipped onions every 5 minutes after that. very tedious, but well worth the effort. Will definitely make this again many times over!! Thank you!

Made this recipe for Thanksgiving dinner this year. Had 10 people to feed so I doubled the recipe. The only thing that I had to change was the breading for the onions. I tried following the recipe, but the flour stuck to the onions and all the panko fell off. I ended up dipping the floured onions into an egg wash and then back into the panko. That method worked a lot better. Loved the flavor of a fresh green bean casserole instead of using all the processed can food!

Great! My husband loves GBC but I truly hate the canned cream of mushroom soup. I made Alton's recipe for Thanksgiving and it was a hit. I added a bit of bacon during while cooking down the mushrooms. It added a bit of flavor ... you know what they say about bacon! Sorry Alton, I did not make the homemade crispy onions. Those came out of the can. My husband was happy and so was everyone else. Thanks! The Crider Family, Fullerton, CA

Good, but maybe not the "best ever." For those who want a healthier option to the French's-onions-and-canned-cream-of-mushroom-soup version, this dish is great. But for those, like myself, who really just like the taste of a well-seasoned, buttered-and-garlicked green bean, you might just want to sauté some green beans.

One star because there is not a lower rating. . .
This is the second time I tried this recipe. . . .gross! Waste of money and more importantly a HUGE waste of TIME!! The onions have never browned, crisped up; after putting in the oven ,the "cream of mushroom" was like paste.

Sauce came out great-- it took a lot longer for my sauce to thicken than the time suggested, so be patient.

The onions didn't turn out. I babied them and turned them like 6 times (every 4 minutes instead of three times total, which would be every time minutes and they didn't burn. But, for whatever reason my onions did not pick up ANY of the stupid topping. I was very frustrated... I saved it by sending out my boyfriend to go pick up a can of fried onions and tossing out the onions entirely.

I love this recipe! I did like others and just bought french's onions. But the cream of mushroom was divine! So delicious! Best I've ever had. Like the last reviewer I didn't think the half and half was thickening, but after baking it and letting it rest a while, it turned out perfect - not watery at all. My husband's family loved it and wants me to make it every year :

Average. I had trouble making the onions turn out tasty, and making the half-and-half thicken properly.

The first time I made this I had to throw out the pan I cooked the onions on as they were baked on to the pan. Turn the temp down, don't slice onions as thin as Alton. I use a silpat and gently sprayed the onions with a mist of olive oil before baking. This is work but everyone who ate the end product thinks this is the best green bean recipe.
