This recipe is needlessly complex. He may as well suggested only tomatoes picked in August on the southern most slope of Vesuvius. It is a simple cocktail no need to junk it up with silly ingredients or tomato ice cubes. I like Mr. Brown's recipes for the most part but this one doesn't make it. However after making Alton's black pepper vodka, 1/2 shot, a full jigger of vodka as an ingredient to my own Bloody Mary cocktail consisting of ice a full 12 oz. glass tomato juice 4 dashes El Tapatio sauce. Even Clamato juice would work if a sweet Bloody Mary is ones preference.

AB's approach emphasized fresh, ripe, heirloom and cherry tomatoes. couldn't agree more. but this episode was broadcast in the winter. even if i could get fresh heirloom tomatoes this time of year, i wouldn't expect them to be any good.

so my question is this: is AB suggesting that we should wait until summer to try his recipe, and thenceforth only ever have bloody marries in july and august?

In the Pantry Raid: Seeing Red episode, AB recommends that canned tomatoes have better flavor than off-season fresh tomatoes due to being canned at the peak of ripeness. On the other hand, i'm not sure i've ever seen canned heirloom or cherry tomatoes.

A little more guidance on these issues would have been appreciated.
