As others have noted, the golden syrup is the key. It took away that sickenly sweet taste that most pecan pies have. The spiced pecans were delicious! Just adjust the spices to your taste. Be sure to pulse the pecans for the crust until they are fine- my food proecessor took quite a few more pulses than the recipe called for.

My family is from Southern Missouri and the Carolinas. This is the best Pecan Pie I have ever had. I did have a bit of an issue keeping out of the Pecans whilst mixing the filling.

Spiced pecans overpower the whole thing. I think I prefer my pecan pie without cumin or cayenne.

This pie was amazing! The Golden Syrup is the key. I admittedly held back on the cayenne a bit - wanting just a hint of it in the final result. Perfect.

Wow, this pie was great for Thanksgiving and will make repeat appearances for many holidays to come! I loved the spiced pecans and will double the batch next time just to have on hand for snacks. I had to add 15 min baking time, but it turned out perfectly. The sweetness and spice were a great combination and the whole thing was easier to make than I expected.

The Spiced Pecans are spicy loved them added extra's to ice cream.
Loved the kick of the cayenne pepper to the spice mixture and I can see how that may be much for some..Family and I loved it. I did buy the pan on amazon, and the golden syrup and I found by measure on the scale I had extra pecans? Needed more pecans than 3 1/2 in pie the crust for next time.Mixing pecans in the crust with the bourbon - just used a nip size bottle Pie was perfect and I never made pecan pie before. Love Alton Brown!!! he's great personality

I thought the Pecan Pie was EXCELLENT! My sister LOVED it! She even made a request that I make it for Christmas as well. Two, in fact...one just for her. What made it so good was the spiced pecans and the golden syrup. If you can't find Golden Syrup, try Whole Foods. The other difficult ingredient was the dried orange peel, but lo and behold, my regular supermarket had them. It that doesn't work out, then try Fairway Market.
I do think that if you don't use the right ingredients, then you don't have a right to criticize the recipe. Also, if you have the time to write a lengthy criticism about Alton not using "standardized U.S. measurements", then you have the time to go online and order a kitchen scale for yourself. If you are a fan of Good Eats, then you know that Alton has stated time and time again that weighing your ingredients is far more accurate than using measuring cups.
I am totally bummed that there is only one more Good Eats show to watch.

Oh my soul! These pecans are HEAVENLY!!! They offer the ying and yang of spices that combine for a orchestra of flavor! You have a lite crunch at the beginning followed by a subtle sweetness and ending with a warm spicy flavor after you swallow that knocks your socks off! GOOD!!!! Needless to say, it was a home run at Thanksgiving!!! It was so good I'm making it again tonight to take to work tomorrow! Thank you Alton!!!
