This is by far the best ice cream I have ever made. I have always stuck to the non-custard ice cream recipes because they are a lot quicker and less labor-intensive. Well, this recipe did take A LOT more time, utensils, and patience, but it is WELL worth it! I was churning out (no pun intended Crystal quality ice cream, which is good, but not the best. This recipe gave me Godiva quality ice cream. I am too spoiled to go back to my old non-custard recipes now!

While it is quite a lengthy process to make, the instructions were very clear and thorough. The ice cream was absolutely fantastic using the exact ingredients this recipe calls for. Definitely comparable to the premium, "more expensive" brands.

When I first got my ice cream churn, I tried to make ice cream from their recipe. It was a disaster. I put it away and forgot about it until I saw this episode of good eats. I tried the recipe, and found it to be everything I had expected from homemade ice cream; Creamy, Flavorful, and just fantastic. It takes a little time but is well worth it.

Made this yesterday, tasted it today. Really fantastic flavor, the cocoa makes it. I can't ever leave a recipe alone so I added 1/2 cup melted semi sweet chocolate chips and one package of plain gelatin, softened, to the hot custard mixture for smoother texture. I always add gelatin to my ice cream, it really improves the texture, the chocolate chips help firm it up. I left one third plain, added chopped andes mints to another third and mixed chopped candy (goobers, malted milk balls, raisinettes and milky ways into the final third. YUM

Although this ice cream was more expensive than other recipes I've tried, it was far better. It had less air and was creamier.

I have been looking for a good homemade chocolate ice cream recipe. This is very rich by use of the cocoa powder. The tip of not adding the vanilla until after cooking makes a difference.

Wow--this may be the best ice cream I've ever had. If not, it's close. It's a little time-consuming to put together, but it's definitely worth it. Yummy, yummy, yummy.
