I made these cookies for work, and they turned out fantastic! I didn't have any problems with the chocolate dough at all. A tip for those using a hand mixer like myself, the dough will separate and become flaky-looking when you first mix it. Get your (clean hands in the bowl and finish the mixing, it will re-mold your dough. And don't use a mixer for the parts Alton says to use your hands. He hand-mixed for a reason! Also, when you're rolling the log, do it how Alton does in the video: Lift the wax paper/flexible board/etc so the dough rolls into itself, and gently guide it. I followed the recipe and technique exactly how it was laid out, and the cookies came out just like it said they would.
Fantastic, and a new favorite!

The peppermint portion of this cookie was fantastic! Moist, rolled out beautifully, and very tasty if you love peppermint. The chocolate potion, as others have commented, came out too crumbly for me. I added milk to the mixture to try to give it moisture to roll out and still had no success. Rolling out was a disaster, as was rolling the dough(s into a log. After baking, the chocolate cookie was even more crumbly. I'd consider keeping the peppermint portion of the recipe, but definitely need to tweak the chocolate portion to make it work. The flavors were all there and yummy, but just not a good consistency.

Okay...I didn't mind the time that went into these, but I did mind that they went along horribly. The peppermint portion came out just fine; it was the chocolate portion that didn't turn out very well. It crumbled far too much to make rolling easy...even after a few attempts at adding moisture. Then, after baking, they turned out very, very dry. I followed the directions word for word, so I am not sure what the issue is here. If, however, the cookies were more moist and the chocolate portion was not crumbly, I would give these cookies a much higher rating because the taste is there...they just don't look very good and are, like I said, on the dry side.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS COOKIE!!! This was a lot of work for a lack lustre cookie! Very dry & doughy. We followed the directions exactly. The chocolate part was like not sweet at all. I think semi-sweet chocolate would have been better. I also think 1/2" thick slices are too thick, but considering how dry they were, I think they would have fallen apart if sliced thinner. Will not be making these again.

This recipe was alot of work for the lack of taste in the cookie. They were okay, but not one I would add to my Chrismas cookie list. I read where someone added white chocolate, I'm thinking I will dip half the cookie in white or semi-sweet chocolate, leaving half the swirl cookie exposed for the look. The dipping should add some more great flavor to this cookie, or maybe even drizzle the chocolate all over the cookie leaving the swirl exposed underneath. Definetly will use the parchment paper for rolling the dough out, I didn't, what a chore that was. Also, once the dough is rolled up in parchment paper, you can even roll the entire log to stretch the roll if it is layers are too thick.

Delicious! All the work goes into the dough, after that it is just slice and bake. The trick for me was chilling the dough to the right temp to roll. 5 min was not long enough for my chocolate dough. I like smaller cookies, so I rolled tighter and sliced thinner than the recipe calls for. I ended up with 5 doz cookies. I will definitely be making these every year.

I added a bit more milk and substituted about a fourth of a cup of soy flour which always seems to make baked goods moister. I did not let the dough rest right after mixing it, I went right into mixing the candy canes and chocolate. I didn't add the peppermint flavor since I don't like a lot of peppermint. I used parchment paper to roll out the dough so that I wouldn't add any more dryness to the cookie. This made it easy to put the two together. Once it sat for a few hours it was hard enough to be sliced with a plain old serrated knife. It is hard to tell when they are done and I found that the closer I stuck to the cooking time the softer they were. I also added some royal icing to the top which gives them that little extra oomph they need to be superb

First problem, if you have a hand held mixer, its not happening..... dough separates. Second problem, if you live in south Florida, the humidity kills the cookie dough. Very very time consuming and then after trying to roll the dough, I said forget it and just balled the dough up and made regular cookies.
