I was really excited about these. They are adorable and look delicious. I read all the reviews and watched the video before I made them. They are fairly unremarkable. They turned out soft and sort of buttery, but the flavors are sort of muted. I added dutch cocoa and used semi-sweet instead of unsweetened chocolate. I used a tbsp of peppermint extract and pulverised the candy canes. There is a lot of chilling and rolling an cutting for the cookies to only come out pretty tasty. I was disappointed. I used store-brand butter and I don't have a cool stand-up mixer. They did turn out quite moist- like a good sugar cookie, but overall, not as unique and tasty as I would like.

Read ALL of the reviews for these cookies and I was REALLY wary about trying them. Used semisweet baker's chocolate instead of unsweetened chocolate and used 2 tsp of peppermint extract instead of 1. They were a little tricky to get the peppermint dough on top of the chocolate, but we figured it out! They baked extremely well and taste DELICIOUS!! I will definitely make these again. Only complaint I have is that it did not yield 3 dozen as stated...only got about 2 and 1/2 dozen! Other than that, great recipe!!

I'm not sure why so many people had a hard time with this recipe - it was time consuming, but pretty simple. You just have to take your time and move slowly. I had no problem with dry or crumbly dough and they cookies look, smell and taste amazing. I gave it 4 stars only because I yielded about 2 dozen cookies and not the 3 dozen the recipe states. I agree with a previous reviewer who said to watch the video first - he gives a few tips in there that are really helpful.

I followed the directions to a T (which I NEVER do, set the timer even for the chilling reqts (2 hours!! TWICE-what a long day!!, had new baking powder(bubbles here we come!!, used brand ingredients as opposed to generic despite my currently VERY strict budget that doesn't allow for such luxuries, I contemplated the humidity in the house (really?! who does that!?!, and I watched the video 3x just to make sure I was ready. The cookie was tough like the dough had been overworked. I wondered about that as I worked the batches-but thought-they're the professionals, the chocolate wasn't very chocolatey despite my terribly expensive chocolatier purchase. I used an electric knife like the video. Ugh! I ended up having to use 1" cuts because with 1/2" (w/reg knife or electric, the choc portion of cookie was nothing but broken pieces. The cookies didn't spread when baked..They are edible nuked and then soaked in milk. :(

Extremely dry. The flavor was fine but I was looking for something more chewy not bricky. Not hard to make just a lot of wait around time.

These cookies were surprisingly easy to make given the finished product. I used slightly less pepperment flavoring than called for, but depends on how "minty" you like them. Also I divided the dough into 2 bowls and then added the extra ingredients (ie: chocolate etc to the dough with the mixer rather than by hand. The dough rolled easily, next time I'll try to roll it a little tighter.

I love this cookie recipe! I thought it was really fun to make and it looks impressive when your done! The peppermint part of the cookie was wonderful, but I thought that the chocolate part was a little dry so next time I think I will add an extra egg yoke to it and I might use semi sweet chocolate for a little bit more flavor. Overall it was awesome, thanks Alton!

I just made these cookies last night. I'm giving it 5-stars for the following reasons:
1 The flavor is outstanding: Many of the reviews said that these cookies were flavorless, etc. I disagree completely. The cookie shouldn't taste like an Andy's Candy, instead, it has subtle flavors, but they're all present.
2 They're beautiful: Mine have a few more swirls in them than the picture does, but the presentation of them is lovely.
3 These aren't easy to make, but I think that the whole point of making some fancy sugar cookies is to make something that you don't do every day. So, while it took me about an hour just to make the dough, the end result is worth it.
