This is my very favorite christmas time cookie recipe. Every one asks me if I'm making it every year. I love it! I make a quadruple batch if I"m going to a cookie exchange and it always makes plenty. Love it, love it, love it. I'm only sorry it's out in his Good Eats book now so it's easily available in print for the whole world.

Just made this cookies. Yes they are quite time consuming. I used a different sugar cookie recipes that I was used to using. Also used Ghiradelli semi sweet baking bar instead of unsweetned. I also took the advise of others and added more peppermint extract and really grinded those candy canes up. The chocolate dough was breaking apart so that became the inner layer and the sugar dough the out. I baked only 10 minutes and they came out good. I will make more modificationson my next attempt. Worth the time spent

It took me my 4th attempt to get it perfect. My first attempt, I was tired and didn't use enough sugar, The second and third was all techniques on rolling. The 4th batch was spot on, They are highly desired, and became a staple of my holiday gatherings.

i loved this recipe and so did my family! it was a time consuming process, but if you truly enjoy making food, that shouldn't be an issue. as long as your willing to wait while they cool, these cookies are enjoyable to make and eat. the dough tends to crumble a bit, but as it is easier to handle when slightly thaw. also, the chocolate was not as noticeable as i like, but that's probably because i am addicted to the stuff. (woo! maybe adding a few chocolate chips to the dough might add some extra pizzazz? yummmm, GREAT HOLIDAY COOKIES!!!!

i thaught that the chocolate was a bit brumbly, but that could have been from the fact that i changed the recipie a bit. i took pilsbury 24 pack of sugar cookie squares and used 20 for each part. i put about a cup of nestle semi-sweet morsels and put them into a bowl with 20 of the dough squares after i melted the chocolate. i took a half a cup of crushed candy canes and mixed them into 20 dough squares, added the egg yolk and rolled them up into a log and chilled for about 2 hours. the first 6 i put in were huge and took 15 minutes to cook but were still a bit raw in the middle but cooled ok. i then cut the rest into 1/4 inch slices and they baked well. i thaught that the candy cane chunks made it a bit hard to cut through the log after i chilled it even though i pulverised them with a meat tenderiser. i made this revised recipie with stuff my mom had leftover from making christmas cookies and thout that it was an economical alternative to going out and buying all the proper inqreedients. please pardon my spelling errors for i am merely a thirteen year old who likes to cook.

With a few modifications, this recipe easily creates a Five star holiday cookie!
Some of the problems other reviewers were having (cookies falling apart, chocolate dough cracking while being rolled, too bland can be fixed with these few easy changes:
First and foremost, the sugar cookie recipe must be swapped with the following recipe:
1 1/2 C Sugar Mix sugar, butter, coconut, vanilla & egg
1 1/2 C Unsalted Butter together. Blend well. Stir in remaining
    1 C Flaked Coconut ingredients.
    1 tsp Vanilla Extract
    1 egg
    3 C All Purpose Flour
    1 tsp Baking Powder
    1/2 tsp Salt

Secondly, a teaspoon of shortening needs to be added to the melted chocolate, this seems to prevent the chocolate dough from hardening and cracking.
Increase the peppermint extract to 1 1/2 tsp to add some much needed flavor to the peppermint dough, as the 1/2 C crushed candy did not seem to be enough. And lastly, sprinkle some crushed peppermint candy ontop the pinwheels immediately after removing from the oven. This gives it a chance to melt a bit, while adding flavor and color. Delicious! Goodluck!

I waited all week to finally make these cookies on Christmas evening. The chocolate dough came out crumbly when I needed to cut it, and the peppermint dough was gooey and there was no point in trying to roll it, I just spread it like paste on the chocolate dough. The roll gets smashed down when you try to cut it, and as with many log-roll type foods, the ends are never square so it's pretty much wasted dough.

It says to make the dough 1/4 inch thick and cut into 1/2 inch slices... with the loss of the ends and following this rule, I ended up with 12 smushed pinwheels (as opposed to the recipe yield of 3 dozen?! that were still doughy in the middle, with flavor that is rather mediocre, after 3 hours of my time (including chill time. I would have much rather spent my Christmas evening with my kids making snickerdoodles.
