First, the basic sugar cookie recipie is very shortbread like.
Second, I omited the pepermint and just did a chocolate/vanilla swirl. (I wanted to try it first.
This is fun to work and is just a simple jump from the basic recipie.

I really looked forward to making these and was really disappointed. The dough stuck to the marble surface even though dough was well chilled and board was well dusted. After managing to make it into a roll, slice and bake, the cookie taste was awful. This one will not be making it into my recipe box!

These cookies were fun to make, and they look wonderful. Using parchment paper on the pans makes it simple to remove them without breaking. I chilled the dough log overnight, this made it very easy to cut them cleanly.

I thought the cook it self tasted very good. I though the rolling of the two doughs were more dificult then I thought it would be. I was also very time consuming.

I usually really like Altons recipes and usually have great luck with them.
I was quite disappointed that the dough was quite sticky, no matter how cold or how much confectionary sugar I used.
Also, I sprayed the pan with Pam. To no avail, the cookies stuck and only got about 13 of the 36 cookies. My husband is enjoying the broken ones.
Im not too sure if Ill make these again, or if I do, I make try to pry them off the pan when they first come out of the oven.

I'm not even close to experienced in the kitchen; I work construction for a living. I chose these cookies after my kids watched them be made on TV. Everything went great.

First off, the directions are a little confusing because of the poor organization. Second, I had difficulty rolling the two doughs together, so it ended up looking horrible. Last, when I went to cut after refrigeration, it crumbled and fell apart!!

The hardest part about making these pinwheels is getting the doughs rolled out evenly. I'd suggest flattening the two different doughs as much as you can while still being able to move one on top of the other. For crushing the candy canes I put several inside a kitchen towel and repetitively hit it on top of a hard surface until you brake them down to your desired size.

These cookies turned out quite well and made the exact amount as noted. However, if you are making a double or triple recipe, you might want to make each batch at a time rather than trying to double recipe. The peppermint dough is a little difficult to roll out without the candy being crushed a bit and these are challenging to someone who doesn't bake a lot. However the presentation is great for a cookie exchange as they look good and are very tasty.
