I expected the waffles to be sweeter and was actually disappointed with the taste without syrup--almost like eating cocoa without sugar. Once I added syrup, they were very good. Looking forward to trying them as a dessert with a sweeter topping.

The smell that filled the kitchen was wonderful--like hot cocoa on a cold day!

1.75 ounces is way more than 3 tablespoons!! I made them both ways and I think I will split the difference and add 1.25 ounces next time. 5 stars because they were delicious both ways!!

Easy to make, delicious! Only had a cup of buttermilk so used heavy cream and milk to make up the second cup of liquid and they were still awesome. Start a little light on the batter for the first one and adjust to prevent overflow-messy batter to clean your iron if you use too much. The cook gets to eat the first one anyway :-

I made these waffles for breakfast today and we all really enjoyed them. They were easy to make and I actually got 12 8-inch waffles from the quantity of batter! They were chocolate-ty without being overwhelmingly so and are wonderful topped with strawberry or raspberry jam. Thank you, Alton, for sharing this wonderful recipe.

AB did it again! I can't keep these in the freezer, because they get eaten so quickly!

I keep some of these in the freezer so I can whip up a dessert in no time. Warm them up in the toaster and top them with ice cream and berries. Always a huge hit!
