I do not like ginger snaps so I was reluctant to try this recipe, but I am glad that I did. This was the best ham I have ever had and it saved me a lot of money as I typically buy a ham from The Honey Baked Ham Co.

You have to try this ham!!!

Best ham recipe I have ever used. Might even be better than Honey Baked Ham.

A better recipe would have gone into more detail of what exactly a "city ham" is. Brined in what? Could I take a fresh ham and brine it? My grocer had no idea what a city ham is.

I jsut made this recipe for a Christmas party and it was a hit! I followed it exactly and couldn't be more pleased with the result. I overheard one guest say that he had "become full three servings ago but just couldn't stop eating"! This ham was so much better than a Honeybaked ham and much nicer priced. I did not have any issues with mushiness upon reheating, either. Perfect all around.

Fairly easy to prepare, although the crushed gingersnaps tend to not stick very well. I suggest placing the ham on a stand where you can reach the lower areas when painting the mustard, and packing on the brown sugar and gingersnaps. If you do it in the roasting pan, the sides of the pan make it difficult to get the lower areas covered.

Just a tip - if you make this a little ahead, and feel it needs to be gently reheated, line a pan with foil, drizzle just a small amount of apple juice over it, and poured some in the bottom of the pan first. This keeps it from drying out and is a nice complement to the flavor of the ham.

I made this ham for Christmas Dinner for the first time about three years ago (after the first time I saw this episode of Good Eats. Everyone loved it so much, that it has become a tradition. I am getting ready to make this recipe for the fourth time. I use a whole ham, and if you do as well, keep in mind that the cooking time for the intial bake increases drastically (6-7 hours.

I tried the City Ham recipe for my office Christmas Potluck yesterday and I thought they were going to fight over the bone! Everyone was asking me the recipe for ham. I will make this for our Christmas Eve dinner this year so my own family can enjoy! Thanks Alton

I converted my ham hating husband with this recipe. He must have eaten 10 slices!! The gingersnaps and bourbon give it a great kick.
