A simple and wonderful fruitcake recipe. Like most of the planet, I've never been a fan of the glazed, green-cherried fruitcakes available, and I've heard that the mail order Trappist Monk fruitcakes are wonderful. With this recipe, I've no need to order any online. The only change I made was to up the pecans to about a cup, as AB mentions. I also found that it takes alot longer in my oven than in the recipe with slightly smaller loafpan, so don't be surprised if it takes you 1 1/2 hours to bake.

I always wanted to like fruit cake but could never get past to candied what's its. it's moist, rich and most of all edible at all times. I've eat it Breakfast lunch and supper and haven't decided when I like it the best. I'll just say....always! Alton, you the man!

One of the very best non-traditional recipes I've had. The non inclusion of candied fruit is special in its self. Try brandy instead of rum. Adds more flavor and less "booze" impact. Sambuca works good too.

I call it "trail mix" cake so people will eat it. It's good, it's moist, it's not your ordinary fruit cake. I make it for my clients every year adn they always look forward to it and ask for the recipie.

I am a fruitcake Connosieur, and I can tell you that this recipe is excellent. I love fruitcake, despite all of the horrible things that are said about this wonderful food. I prefer making them as opposed to buying them, however, if you must buy, then buy from Harry & Davids, because if you want a great fruitcake for a reasonable price they are certainly the best of the bunch. Please don't listen to the propaganda surrounding fruitcake unless you have already tried it. Its something you won't want to miss out on.

This is the best fruitcake I have ever eaten , & my mother's was eagerly awaited every year. The only problem I have with it is that it never lasts long enough to age ( I have 2 loaves hidden now in my dresser , but they are endangered because I know they are there!

My mother-in-law gave me the recipe. I was truly surpised how easy it was to make. Although, I did add juice of half a lemon and orange to help the fruit re-hydrate. All my co-workers love it!
