I make this and give it as gifts to my Fruitcake loving family. They say it is the best they have ever tasted. My Mom who doesn't like fruitcake in general even loves this cake.

I love cakes and this one is my best ever.....Instead of Rum, I had brandy and had all mixture of dried fruits... came out excellent! Thanks Alton for this. I was looking for a receipe for fruit cake and this one is going to stay with me for a long time...

I am so excited to have found this fruitcake! My children and I share an allergy to artificial coloring and so fruitcake using the usual red and green candied fruits has always been off limits for us. You might not realize how desirable fruitcake is until you can't have it. I am sooo excited to find this recipe and I want to say THANK YOU Alton for letting us join the ranks of fruitcake eaters!

I tried this receipe last year for the first time. I made it for my Christmas Party and for Christmas Day. It disappeared each time with people who said they hated fruit cake actually enjoying this one. Alton is correct when he says this one is different and I would encourage everybody to take a leap of faith and try this or as I will do try the one in his I'm Just Here for More Food baking book. You won't be disappointed.

I had lost a true and trusted recipe for fruitcake that I loved and used to make many years ago. Well, when I saw this one presented on television by Alton Brown, I knew I had to try it. I definately was not disappointed. It was wonderful and I hated that I had promised to share it with family and friends as I wanted to keep it just for myself. Thanks for a great tasting fruitcake. I did only one thing different in that I kept resoaking the cheesecloth every few days for about a month with rum. I then rewrapped them in foil each time that I did this.

First fruitcake that hasn't been passed around every Christmas for years. You can actually EAT this!

Excellent fruitcake. We brought it to our family Christmas. My brother-in-law, who is not a "fruitcake person," was very skeptical, but he tried it. When we left, he made sure the fruitcake was staying behind, with him! Everyone agreed it was the best, or close to the best, fruitcake they'd ever had.

The only comment I would make on the procedure is this: use as many nuts as you can get away with. I'm not overly wild about nuts (or drupe seeds, or whatever, but I used the maximum amount recommended by Mr. Brown, at my wife's insistence. In the finished product, even I thought that the pecans were a little sparsely distributed. I can't imagine how sparse they'd have been if I'd only used a quarter of a cup.

This is wonderful with marzcapone or cream cheese. My daughter-in-law introduced me to it, and made a second "turn" while I visited for Christmas of 2004. It's the best I can remember having.
