    I have been making this recipe 1-2 times per week since I saw the episode 2 months ago!! I process the oats and almonds in the food processor before toasting them in the oven. I found that makes it easier to cut them in the end. As well as patting the recipe down really well before they bake. I let them cool for about 40 minutes on a rack and then cut them up and let them sit on the rack until completely cooled. With those modifications, I have had no problem cutting them.

    The only thing I want to know is if I can eliminate some of the honey and brown sugar?

    The flavor in this recipe is wonderful. However, like many of the other reviewers I found the final product to represent better granola than granola bars. As granola, it is fantastic. If you're specially looking for bars, try another recipe.

    I really enjoyed this recipe...there's not much of AB's stuff that I don't like. The almond flavor is a bit strong...I would cut it in half next time...I also chopped them up a bit in the food processor (more kid-friendly.

    I did jazz them up a bit: sprinkle of nutmeg, 1/2 tsp. cinnamon mixed in with the oats before baking and a sprinkling of chocolate chips on top before baking. Then, the finale...melt about 2 Tbsp. peanut butter with 1/2 tsp. butter and drizzle on top. Whah la! Chocolate Oat Peanut butter bars! Super yummy and still lower in fat than commercial bars since you drizzle and sprinkle the decadent things on rather than bake them in...a little goes a long way. :o

    I have made these a few times and the flavor is wonderful. My wife uses it as cereal. It tends to get hard cutting them. So I swapped half of oats with puffed rice and it put a little air into bars. Also a little bit of a different flavor.

    I absolutely loved these! I did not use apricots, and put cinnamon on the granola, then more in the sauce, and it was so yummy and seemed to cut through the sweetness. Tasted like those nuts you buy at the fair! : Definitely wait for them to cool before you take out of the pan.

    I modify this recipe all the time. We are a nut-free household, so I figured if I took out the nuts, I'd be able to slot in some other things and still have enough of the binder liquid to hold the bars together. I've made the following changes:

    adding a scoop of protein powder, a scoop of Trader Joe's chai spice (the powder you use to make tea, and chopped dates

    adding some coarse bran to the oats instead of wheat germ, for a nutty, toasty flavor, and then some cocoa powder and chocolate chips

    adding a TB of molasses to the ingredients you cook on the stove for a richer flavor

    adding craisins and yogurt chips

    They've all turned out really well, and again, the harder you pack down the granola, the harder the bars will be in the end.

    On the plus side, the ingredients are all natural and the end product is pretty filling. On the minus side (and there are plenty I thought the cost was ridiculous -- I had no idea how much a small jar of wheat germ cost ($4.75! and nuts of any type of overpriced anyway. But even if it wasn't expensive, I found the taste to be REALLY bland (expect for using light brown sugar, and dried cranberries and peaches, I followed the recipe exactly. Also, the texture is a pain. Once I took it out of the pan, It took FOREVER for it to cool enough so you could cut it without it crumbling into a million pieces. I might try making this one more time but making it sweeter. Otherwise, I think the ingredients are really too cost prohibitive to make this regularly.

    Crumbly, crumbly, crumbly.

    My bars never formed into bars. Basically, I have a bag full of loose granola in my pantry now. It tastes good, perhaps for cereal tommorow morning, but bars they are not.

    Perhaps Alton can have some cheesy actors in costumes playing honey and brown sugar explain the problem in a 3 minute skit with nebulous dialog yet highly accurate scientific principles: THE RECIPE DOES NOT CALL FOR A THICK ENOUGH GLUE TO HOLD EVERYTHING TOGETHER! There, I said it. Where's Elton when you need him?

    Oh the shame of it all. My poor ego now suffers from granola bar envy having read through all the other reviewers who raved about their success. Admittedly, I confess to being an Alton Brown granola bar nincompoop.

    It shouldn't be this difficult, right? Sorry Alton, but crumbly cereal in my pantry is definitely NOT Good Eats.
