Lends itself very well to substitutions and hard to mess up.

For those that find them too sweet I use 1/3 cup honey and 1/6 cup maple syrup.

These were FANTASTIC!! I used muffin tins also. They made it much easier to portion. I could see how they could be difficult to cut.

This was my roommates' favorite recipe I've made them yet. I used the muffin pan suggestion and it worked perfectly. They taste great warm! I didn't make the trip to get the wheat germ, but they still taste great without it. I'm going to definitely pick some up for the next batch though.

Personally, I liked this recipe a lot. I can see where some people may find it too sweet as the only "glue" holding it together is honey and butter. I would be very interested in alternatives.

I made it a point to very finely chop my dried fruits, and I even ran a good amount of the oats and nuts through a good processor, because I was concerned about the bars being too crumbly. Both of these seem to have been good decisions, as I haven't had any issues with crumbling once they had cooled.

I was slow at prepping the fruits, however, and this meant that my liquids reduced more than I would have liked, and I wound up adding a little more honey when the mixture looked dry.

These took a long time to cool to where I could cut them without them falling apart, and if I'd realized that would be the case from the start then I would have employed my refrigerator to speed the cooling process.

In the end, I'm liking this recipe, though the taste of honey is very powerful, compared to the fruits. I guess I was hoping the fruits would contribute more. This is possibly a result of my having to add more honey to make sure I had enough moisture. I'll make it a point to do more prep when I make this again.

This recipe is great, it tastes awesome and is really super easy to make. The only problem I had, like so many others, was that they tended to fall apart when I tried to cut them up so I ended up with more chunks then bars or squares.

Perhaps next time I make them I will allow them to cool a bit longer and see if that helps.

    Great recipe Alton!

My boyfriend and I are training for a marathon and these bars have replaced the expensive Cliff bars that we usually eat before a run. The amount of honey is a great way to get a burst of energy and the protein and fiber provide lasting energy.

Super delicious! I bought wheat germ from the bulk bin at my local market (whenever I buy a whole jar, it just goes to waste because I don't use it as well as many of the other ingredients. The first time I made them, I used the 9x9 pan, but found cutting to be crumbly and problematic. spraying and filling the cups of muffin pan to the top and then compressing was perfect! All cups full, no leftover mix, already portioned "bars", and many fewer crumbs!! Delicious!

After trying these, we have all but stopped buying granola bars at the store. Now I make a batch every 1-2 weeks (even share with friends and the kids love them. I suggest not packing them too tight prior to baking for a more chewy result (our family's preference. They're fantasically easy to make, full of nutrition and loaded with flavor. You can't go wrong here!

This is absolutely the best granola recipe I have ever had. When I make the granola, I shared it with everyone I work with, and they always ask for the recipe.
