After weeks of watching this episode and debating if I wanted to test my oven skills, I went ahead and made this recipe. Two words: F**king Amazing! Super easy to make, I used an 8x8 baking dish (I think that's what he meant, and I used dried cranberries and raisins in lieu of the other ingredients (dried blueberries are like 20 bucks a pound at whole foods!! At any rate, this recipe is so dynamic, and it would be so easy to interchange some ingredients (different kinds of fruits and additives, persay if you wanted chocolate in there or some form of candy, it could easily be done. The vanilla really sticks out though, if you don't like too much vanilla flavor, I'd say only use 1 tsp. And the nutrition facts on the show make this bar a powerhouse! Great recipe, and all the ingredients can be purchased relatively cheap from whole foods, so there you have it!

I'm very overweight and decided to give these a try because; while watching Alton eat these on his show he made them look delicious. AND yes they are. I love the roasted oats, wheat germ, sunflower seeds. I'm 100 lbs overweight and I didn't get there by eating good for you foods so I had my doubts but these are really good tasting. I followed the recipe to the T and they turned out perfect. I took them to the movies with me and caught The Switch and Salt and they got me through both movies with no desire to get anything but something to drink. The toasting is what makes these taste so nutty. Love, love these. I'm going to make his protein bars tomorrow and I can't wait I hope they are as good as these were. Thumbs up for you Mr. Brown.

This recipe is fantastic! I can't wait to try it with different combination. HEADS UP ON THE WHEAT GERM: If you can only find 'toasted' wheat germ at your local grocery store then don't toast it with the oats and almonds and all that. You'll only get little burned bits. Other than that, awesome recipe!

I have been making these bars for a while now and these are the best homemade granol bars I have ever tasted. I take these to school, to work, when I go hiking- these are instant energy packed in yummy bars. I use dried cranberries (craisins instead of a blend of dried fruits. Its tartness is a contrast to the sweetness of the bar, which I really like.
Also, for those who are finding that the bars are falling apart- I have had the same problem when I made this recipe the first time . Now I pat down the mixture tightly into the baking pan with the base of a glass. Once it bakes, it holds together. Hope this helps. Thanks

I watched Alton make these bars on his show. I decided to try it because buying granola bars can become expensive, making it yourself can possibly more healthy and you can decide what you want in it. I tried this recipe and put flax seed in it, dried mangos and craisons. They came out great and stayed together as well. They are a great snack to have around the house or to take on the run. I highly recommend you to try this recipe. It is also easy to make and does not take a lot of time to do. Thanks for a great recipe Alton!

I thought this was an easy enough recipe but the results were disappointing as they crumbled in the pan, and when you ate them as well. The taste was okay. I have not found the perfect recipe yet, still experimenting. Sorry!

I like being able to chose what i put in a bar and not just the preset boxes in the store. And also very east to make and just as easy to make completely organic. I like the idea of having almost all of my food with no preservatives now, i avoid them whenever I can help it. I used Flax seed, almonds, steel cut oats, rolled oats, cashews, dried papaya, dried cranberries and a few other random things, made the binder the same..Excellent!

I've now made this a couple of times... the first time I used volume-based measurements and it was crumbly. The second time I made it, I weighed the ingredients and it was perfect. The other difference the second time was to substitute ground flax seed for the wheat germ (gluten-free that way. Even my kids who are afraid of "healthy" food liked it!
