The mix was very good! However, I add vanilla to mine. Why doesn't anyone else add vanilla? The liquid is very easy to add using a blender.

I appreciate the helpful reviews of Alton's mix recipe. I love real hot cocoa. Additionally, I have made homemade hot cocoa mix for decades. Certainly, personal taste comes into play as to whether you 'add' stuff to your cocoa like cayenne, cinnamon, instant coffee, etc.

I have one question--WHY would you add this mix to hot milk? That's repetitively redundant (ha. If you're using milk-use cocoa pdr and sugar and a pinch of salt. (feel free to add a little inst. coffee, cayenne, cinnamon, or peppermint. That's all you need for REAL hot cocoa.

The purpose of making the mix is to have it handy in your pantry for use with water.

I love this mix because it doesn't have all the hydrogenated garbage commercial mixes have. If you care about trans fats I would not add non dairy creamer to your mix as some reviews suggested. K.I.S.S. (keep it simple, sweetheart!

This recipe is good. Although I added 3/4 tsp cinnamon and I did follow another persons advice and used 3/4 cup powdered creamer and only 1 2/3 cup powdered milk. We love it; I gave it away as Christmas gifts in Christmas tins with dehydrated mini marshmallows that we ordered on line. I also added a stick of cinnamon into the small round tin and sealed it with sticky wrap before putting lid on. I typed up my own labels to tape on the bottom advising gift openers how much to use. I don't know if they like it but we did

My family loves this hot chocolate mix. I leave out the cayenne from the mix, but I add a couple of pinches of either cayenne or cinnamon to each cup.

This cocoa was very simple to make. It took less than 5 minutes. It warmed my 3 young boys up after an afternoon of playing out in the snow. I omitted the cornstarch and the cayenne and it still turned out great. My 7 yr old said this cocoa is better than excellent mom.

This hot cocoa recipe makes for an absolutely amazing homemade holiday gift.

I used an airtight decorative glass container and bought five different mugs for my best friend and her family and it was a huge hit!

Being a broke college student, it made me very happy that I could do something so special and spend around $5 for some very important people.

Hope this helps someone else out with a last minute gift idea!

    Alton Brown rocks!!!!

My palate doesn't seem to be refined enough to declare this recipe so much more extraordinarily better than the store mix, but it is definately cheaper- especially if you make your own powdered sugar out of ordinary table sugar. And you get the added bragging-rights when serving to company calling it 'home made.'

It is quite good. The pepper does at a satisfying, warming 'bite' in the throat, but they mean it when they say 'pinch.' I made my first batch with a measured amount for later replication. A mere 1/2 tsp looked so insignificant compared to the five cups of other dry ingredients, but it was definitely enough to be noticed! Perhaps even too much for a lot of people.

I used regular cocoa because I didn't have Dutch. We also omitted the cornstarch because I generally find cornstarch nasty. It turned out great! I didn't find it too rich at all. I find a lot of hot chocolate to be so sweet I can't finish a whole cup of it but this was PERFECT. Very creamy, which was surprising given the nonfat powdered milk that we used. (I wouldn't use whole milk as another reviewer suggested. Powdered whole milk won't last as long because of the fat in it. So much better than the packaged stuff, which has who-knows-what in it.

This hot cocoa was like a big warm hug! I made it with warm milk but am sure water would work too. My first batch I mixed in a food processor to get out the lumps in the 10X sugar. The second batch was made by sifting the cocoa and sugar. Both worked well. I am not completely sure why dutch processed cocoa was needed. I made 1 batch with Scharffen Berger and the second with Valrhona. Can someone explain why dutch processed is the best? This was easy and so yummy!
