Delicious and healthy recipe! I also added a little bit of seasoning ham to the soup. All I had for seasoning was cumin, kosher salt and pepper.

Love this soup. Make a big pot of it every two weeks, at least. Great to feel like you are eating really healthy food that is so easy to make, and inexpensive too. All the ingredients are healthy and all the flavors come together really well. I throw in some stewed tomatoes (chopped up and a little sour cream. Thanks A.B.!

Wonderful! Even when I erroneously missed a step or a couple, the recipe surpassed my expectations. Thank you for sharing.

Full of flavor! I did use homemade chicken stock. I did not have the coriander or bird of paradise, so I just dried basil & fennel seeds. Pureed about 2/3 of soup & added a splash of 1/2 & 1/2 to make it really creamy. This is a keeper!

I made this tonight for the first time and I was very impressed. This was my first adventure into cooking with lentils, but I've always enjoyed them out. The soup was surprisingly easy to prepare and did not require a whole pantry full of items, which is always nice for me : The only reason I did not give it a whole five stars is due to the fact that like some other reviewers, I added in hot italian turkey sausage. I think it gave the flavor of the soup an extra kick-- the sausage seemed to permeate the broth and give it a touch of spiciness, which I loved. Not sure how it would have been without the sausage since I did modify the recipe slightly, but overall this is a great and easy recipe which doesn't require much money to prepare and could serve a large family.

Yea, this would have been AMAZING if I had used a less salty stock. As it was it was a little overpowering, but I could tell it would have been perfect with less salt, so pick a good stock and you'll be set. I used black lentils and they were delicious in this soup, I'll be making this again frequently.

Absolutely fantastic. Everyone loved it. I added a pound of sweet italian sausage as another reviewer had done. I couldn't find the grains of paradise at my grocery store, so I crushed up some fennel seed and threw that in instead. Tasted awesome. I'm intrigued by the grains of paradise, though, so I'll definitely be on the lookout so that I can add it next time. Thank you, Alton. This will be a go-to recipe for us now.

I love lentil soup, but always had a hard time finding a recipe for a home made soup as thick and tasty as I get in my favorite restaurant - until this one! This even works really well in the slow cooker, I cooked my lentils overnight to make sure they were soft enough, and just drained the water and added all the soup ingredients the next morning. By the end of the day I had lentil soup perfection!

This was very easy to make and tasty. I browned some hot italian sausage and added it to the soup. The Grains of Paradise were definitely hard to find, but I finally found them at Central Market (by H-E-B. Love that store! This will definitely be a regular in our home during the cold months. (=

Simple but rich. This recipe works equally well with red or brown lentils. I can't wait to try it with green or black lentils for more variations. The grains of paradise give it a unique flavor, and it's definitely worth tracking them down online. I've used a combination of black pepper, cardomom, and more coriander to substitute for them in the past, but after making this soup with the real thing, I will always keep them on hand!
