Excellent soup. What I did do different is placed the salt until the end of cooking and I had no bird of paradise and it was delicious.

This is a flavorful and delicious soup...very hearty and satisfying. It's absolutely terrific as a cold weather countermeasure. Warms the hands, the heart and stays with you. A great combination! My daughter made it and her 10-yr-old, 5-yr-old and 4-yr-old ALL LOVED IT! Now that's what I call a high compliment!!! :-

This is in regular rotation in my house. It's easy and relatively quick although it tastes like a soup that took hours to prepare and cook. I substitute dried fennel seed for the grains of paradise and it is fantastic.

I have been making this soup as a regular occurring item on my fall menu for about three years now. It appeals to everyone. For those who have trouble with the ever tricky "Grains of Paradise" they are also known as Guinea Pepper, or Alligator pepper, or Malaguita pepper. You can substitute Cardamom, which is what I do. I also use a vegetable based broth as opposed to chicken broth. Its a crowd pleasing, tummy filling, warm meal.

Made this soup twice in the past week! Healthy, hearty and delicious! And so easy to make! I did the recipe as written the first time and then made a few slight changes the second. Instead of 1 cup of peeled, chopped tomatoes, I added a whole 14 oz can of chopped tomatoes in their juice and I reduced the salt to 1 1/2 teaspoons. Both times I left out the grains of paradise because I wasn't able to find them, and I didn't blend the soup because I don't have a blender here at the moment, but it tasted great nonetheless! This will be one of my go to soups during the fall/winter months! Highly recommended!

This recipe was easy and delicious! We didn't use grains of paradise but we did take the advice of some of the other reviewers and added some garlic (fresh and a bit of powder and black pepper. Also added a bit of paprika and red chili powder for kick since we like things spicy. Definitely will be making this one again.

This lentil soup was WONDERFUL!!! It was tasty and hearty. I will definitely make this again. Since I didn't have grains of paradise or coriander at home, I used Mrs. Dash spices. I did not use a blender; just left it in its same texture. I HIGHLY encourage others to give it try. Great for Fall and Winter weather!!!

Just made this soup for the first time this past week - so simple to make and yummy. I left out the grains of paradise, as I could not find it in the store. I used my blender instead of the hand mixer. Reminds me a lot of split pea soup, which I love. I will make this soup again!

This is an excellent lentil soup recipe which lends itself well to a bit of tweeking as a lot of the posts reflect. I have only made it once so far and used some celeriac in place of the celery as I had none at the time. Think I might give it a bit of heat next time with a red chilli. Can see this recipe becoming a regular. Cheers!
