Love it. I only want 2 cups, so I only use 18 oz. of water and 1/3 cup of coarsely ground coffee (I have a Krups burr grinder and put it on the coarsest grind. I still end up with a good amount of residue in the bottom of my cup. I add the pinch of salt to the coffee before the 4-minute brew as recommended. Strong and smooth.

A pinch of salt? No, don't put salt, sugar, or cream in coffee. If you feel that your coffee needs these items, then you should throw it out and order some fresh roasted coffee. Don't buy it in the store because freshness matters. By fresh I mean days (not weeks after roasting. Thinking of roasted coffee like bread, you wouldn't buy 3 week old bread, would you?

Depending on the coffee is how long you should let it sit in the French press. For most coffees it's four minutes. Personally I think the French press extracts best when using very high quality coffee and shouldn't be used for your run if the mill grocery store coffee. I use columian reserve del patron or Jamaica Blue MountIn Coffee ( jamaicanblue.ca

To answer a couple of the questions that were posted here, I just watched the episode and am reporting back.
He set it on the very middle setting of his Burr grinder. (My French Press recommends a coarse grind, but Alton sets it to medium For stronger coffee set the grind setting to finer (but not too fine or it will clog the screen of your press - although I did like the suggestion of adding a paper filter cut to size if you go towards the espresso grind. For weaker coffee... well... tough it out! :
The salt is to counteract the bitterness inherent in the coffee brewing process. It just cuts down on it a little without affecting the flavor of the coffee.
Love the episode. Love the show. Hope this helps a few of you out there with those questions.

I have been using my French Press for some time, and I was trying to get my coffee to average the strength of a strong cup of diner coffee. I tried this recipe and didn't realize how good the coffee I already had (Trader Joe's Sumatra actually was. I can't see making a pot of diner coffee again, unless, of course I have company over that I want to hasten their departure...

I love the French Press for my coffee but I found that it can also make a pretty decent Americano. In my 4 cup press I use 2 rounded tablespoons of Espresso ground coffee and let steep for 4 minutes. I then use a paper filter (4cup size around the press to keep the finer grounds in the press and out of my coffee.

I finally got a french press and I must say there is a noticable difference between a cup brewed this way and a cup brewed in a normal drip type coffee maker (using the same exact grind. I'm not sure if the salt has anything to do with it but I add my pinch of salt in case it does (family got me new types of coffee so no real clue. As for the user that asked about the grinder he uses, I think it's a KitchenAid KPCG100NP Pro Line Burr Coffee Grinder. I myself use a simple $35 Black and Decker burr grinder that works just fine.
