Yum -I have been looking for a healthier margarita recipe and this is it ! With slight modifications it is still FABULOUS and not so labor intensive. I have a single serving cocktail shaker and add ice cubes, tequila, agave nectar, juice from 1 lime (halve and squeeze into the shaker, juice from 1/2 orange (again, just squeeze into shaker, shake until chilled and pour into a glass rimmed with salt (I wet the rim with the lime or orange. Not too tart or sweet and no High Fructose Corn Syrup or all of the junk in the store mixers.

These are fine margaritas. But I suspect AB was edited a bit by food network, 2 oz tequila is insufficient, I went with 5 oz and was happy. I think I would slice the limes for muddling, they squished around quite a bit. Very happy with the agave though. Do you think I could make the mix in a big batch and freeze in ice cube trays, then when I just must have the marg add tequila and the mix ice cubes?

Delicious! They are a bit labor intensive, but worth it. After making about four, I handed the preparations off to someone else :. Using the juicer next time and making a pitcher full at once.

I am not a big Margarita fan because of all the lime juice. But this one is great!

My parents were connosieurs of the margarita and that gene was passed on to me. And in the never-ending search for the perfect, or at least better margarita, this one now holds top honors for me. Smooth and tasty without all the junk. Thanks Alton for raising the bar.

I really didn't like the addition of the mulled essence from the limes. The oils released made a bitter taste that even the agave nectar didn't overcome. The idea of using the tequila to rim the glass works better if you use the agave nectar.
I started making my margaritas using only fresh lime juice, even going so far as to plant my own tree. I squeeze the harvest and freeze the juice in cubes, bagged up and fresh anytime. All you have to do is read the label of one of the prepared mixes to make you stop using them. Go to a produce stand and buy a box of Bair's limes, 200 should run about $30.
I used my own orange and this is just too labor intensive for entertaining for the purpose of presenting a purist drink that has a bitter finish. I use lime, triple sec and a 100% agave tequila blanco. I like the blanco because anything else in a margarita 'dirties' it.
Just too much work. Apparently I appreciate margaritas faster than most people.

Love, love, love this marg! This recipe really changed the way I view a margarita! It is labor intensive, so we save it for the weekends- but it's work the wait!
AB- thank you!

Great recipe. Be careful with the orange though; the recipe call almost for too much IMHO. Make sure its a small one (the size of a large lime or use only a quarter of a medium size orange. Else the orange may overpower the lime. As for cutting 4 limes to 3 or 2, I would only do so if I also cut the orange proportionately.
