I agree with the reviewer above - too much lime juice. First go around was almost impossibly tart. And I prefer mine a little stronger, so I added more tequila to balance it out.
Also, I didn't have agave nectar, so I substituted simple syrup, but it's not a 1:1 substitute -- simple syrup is not nearly as sweet, so I just added it to taste.
I think with a little experimentation, this will be a time-consuming but solid recipe.

We tried this recipie last night and 4 limes is too much lime - unless you double up on the tequila and the agave. Muddling the lime and orange is a very nice addition though.

Outstanding recipe. A bit of work, but worth it! Love the orange in it. Thanks, AB!

Wow! Even better than I imagined. Probably one of the best margarita's I've ever had. I can't wait to make them at the next party I go to. I've not made margaritas at home in a long time (since the 90's?, since I started getting angry because everything in the store is made from high fructose corn syrup like we're all a bunch of ants or something. Even the big name margarita mixes are all syrup. Anyway, these are great, why would anyone buy a bottle of mix in a store to make margaritas? I'm going to need more limes and oranges (and maybe tequila.

My husband and I have tried many recipes and mixes for good homemade Margaritas, and this one is the best we've tried. The ingredients are very simple but they work together beautifully. I found Agave nectar at Trader Joe's - they have both light and dark, but I got the light since that's what the recipe calls for. I'll be attempting to make a whole pitcher next time, as nobody would ever want only one of these amazing Margaritas. Thank you, Alton, for another wonderful recipe!

This margarita is, without a doubt, the absolute best I have ever tasted!! I didn't even use 100% agave tequila; I just used the bottle of plain old gold mixto I had on hand. I can't wait to try it with the good stuff! Echoing the comments of the first two gentlemen, this is indeed a labor intensive cocktail. But, do it once, and it will truly become a labor of love. So gather your hardware & software, assemble this cocktail, and prepare to enjoy!!!!
P.S. Thanks to Justin for the idea on how to prepare larger quantities in a user-friendly manner.

I made one for myself and after the 5 minutes of work I decided; 1. This drink is amazing! 2. There has to be a better way to make it. If you just want just one its not that bad, but I wanted more. I used one orange and eight limes and ended up with about 4 cups when mixed. I zested the entire orange and about 4 limes, I wasn't that careful to get all the zest off the limes because the main players should be lime juice, the bitter orange (like triple sec, and tequila, not lime zest. I set that aside and juiced all the citrus and put the juice in a blender and blended that for a couple seconds to break up the pulp. I added the zest and blended just enough to mix it in. Then I strained out the pulp, now mix in the agave nectar and tequila and the result can be served on the rocks or shaken to chill. I can't taste the difference between this and the original recipe but this way is way eaiser to make in larger quantities for a party.

Wow, these margaritas are a lot of work but well worth it. Once you have one of these, you will never go back to the bottled mix.
As for the Agave Nectar, I found it at my local Super Walmart. Go Fig.
Muddle, Shake, sit back and enjoy!!!!!!
