I made this dish ahead as a time saver and this sauce is so delicious! I used a roux to thicken mine properly and finished with a squeeze of lemon...SO GOOD! I ignored the warnings about the onions and shouldn't have...they smelled great cooking, but came out super chewy.

I made this tonight. I wanted to try it before Thanksgiving just incase it needed tweeking. Its fabulous. I wasnt sure about the fried onions so I just made it without. It was great. I substituted whole milk as a calorie saver, yum. Half and half would be creamier but wasnt missed, I promise. Very good :

This recipe never fails to get rave reviews from our dinner guests and we've yet to have leftovers. The baked onions are a real pain and have yet to make them correctly, trust me and use the canned onion rings.

This recipe looks absolutely delicious and I am planning on making it for Thanksgiving. Has any tried making it in a crockpot?? I want to prepare it that way and would like to know how long it would need to cook in one and on what level of heat. Thanks in advance and happy holidays to all.

During one of the holiday shows a few years ago Alton described how much people love traditional dishes from their childhood. He used this dish as an example. I found it very refreshing that he was so honest and it reflects the same thing I've found with my own family at the holidays. Nobody wants to eat your latest experiment. Just make the green bean casserole that Nana did. Yes, with the soup and the Durkee French Fried Onion Rings.

This beats the canned soup version, any day! I added a little grated Swiss cheese. By the way, it is roux, not rue. Rue means to regret doing something or whining about it later.

Delicious! The only thing I did different was to use two cans of mushrooms as I did not have any fresh mushrooms on hand. The taste was wonderful! The white rue sauce was subtle with flavor and complimented the green beans perfectly. I had some fresh petite French green beans that were so delicate.....mmmmmmmm.

This is absolutely the best green bean casserole! For those of you who (like me hate anything with "Cream of..." soup casseroles, this is the solution! It's creamy and delicious and actually tastes like gourmet stuff. Impress your family this year (and I promise, they'll still love it!
