This was delicious! It wasn't too modern, either. It had that country flavor with a twist. I told Mom that I'm bringin' it to Christmas.

So much better than the recipe on the back of the fried onion can. A bit more time consuming, but *well* worth it.

made this for thanksgiving in two batches -one vegan and the other normal. Vegan version used tofu to make a sour cream sort of sauce. Both versions tasted fine. I personally would prefer no white sauces so next time i think i will leave out the white stuff.

It took a long time and my onions didn't come out very nice. I think cheating on those might be a good idea. I used water to make the bread crumbs stick better since the onions weren't moist enough to really add much to them.

Excellent! I made it for Thanksgiving and to go with leftovers from Thanksgiving. Everyone loved it! I didn't have the time to do the onions so I cheated and used the store bought french fried onions. I did have two additions: couple of dashes of worcestershire sauce and one shallot. This will be our new Thanksgiving tradition.

This was a wonderful Thanksgiving side dish! I used French Green beans instead and nice large dark mushrooms (I cannot recall the type. One thing I should have done in preparing the onions is spread them out in a single layer on the pan when baking. They tended to be a little too clumpy. It's so much better than buying store bought "french fried onions" -- I got rave reviews when I prepared this dish!

This recipe was amazing. My whole family loved it. Definitely worth the extra time it took to make the cream sauce. I will never eat green bean casserole made from canned cream of mushroom again!

Made this for Thanksgiving 2011; Alton, I received so many compliments, I'm never going back to the canned bean recipe, EVER! The fresh mushrooms were delish -- everything was, really. I admit, I cheated a bit, though. Used frozen, organic green beans, and the canned fried onions. Other than that, did everything as directed. Look out, church potluck! Thank you, Alton. This is my go-to recipe.
