This is My FAVORITE casserole recipe! The onions didn't quite turn out as I had hoped so I cheated and used french's onions instead.

Yup ... making it again this year! Just needed a little reminder of the ingredients and thought I'd add my two cents of greatness. Thank you Alton.

Honestly I never really understood why the famous mushroom soup green bean casserole is so popular. I personally never cared for it. Tastes too canned, for lack of a better word. I prefer a more home-cooked fresh taste. I found this recipe and decided to do a trial run before the big T day. WOW, really good. I tried it twice. First making my onions the way the recipe calls for. They were good but as other reviewers stated, you really need to watch them. They will burn fast. Second time I used French's fried onions...even better. Seemed to give it a nice crunch and an added kick. SO that being said, I think I will use the French's and save myself some time! I also cooked my green beans a bit longer, 8-10 mins and used a mix of baby bella and white mushrooms.

The basic casserole is scrumptious - but the onions burned on me 2 years in a row. Last year, I resorted to canned onions. This year, I am making the casserole up ahead of time - so when the onions burned again - I decided to go to Guy Fieri's method of dusting the onions with seasoned flour and frying in a pan - much better control of the finished product. Love Alton's basic casserole - but gave it a 3 because of burnt onions 2 years in a row!!!

My husband despises the standard green bean casserole but loves this one. He says this is the way green bean casserole is supposed to taste - canned soup not needed. We make it every Thanksgiving!

I have done this recipe three times now with great results. This is just what the canned-soup rehab cook ordered! You CAN do it without the prepackaged soup and onions! AND IT IS BETTER! If your crowd is accustomed to the out-of-cans recipe, I would recommend you bake until your green beans are fully tender so you don't shock your eaters beyond their limits. Whatever you do, don't forget nonstick spray under the onions - I made that mistake and lost about half to clinging and scorching. Slice them with a mandolin slicer to ensure uniform browning, trust the recipe, and you will be rewarded with fabulousness. Alton is the man!

This looks perfect for our Thanksgiving. I wonder, has anyone made this ahead of time and froze it? It looks like it would work for a do ahead... thanks!

I make this every year and every year everyone loves it. It's the best Green Bean Casserole recipe out there. BIG, BIG thanks to Alton Brown.
My big tip to everyone is to watch the onions while they're cooking. They cook really fast so to avoid burning WATCH them.

I love Alton Brown, but he was a little off with this recipe! The onions do tend to burn easily, so keep an eye on them! The amount of pepper is way too high, I would cut it in half. The cook time of the green beans is a little to short, I would do at least 8 minutes. So because of those things I give it 3 stars, but I've made it many times with my corrections and its DELICIOUS! Then it becomes 5 stars!
