Better than any onion dip you can buy in the store. Super easy and super good! Didn't change a thing, but I like the suggestion RenateH made in that review, bacon grease instead of olive oil. Hmmm, I think there is a ballgame on later. I better get started!

This was just amazIng. I have been looking for a recipe for French onion dip that tasted like that served in one of our local restaurants. I found it here! Thank you!!

Best ever! Beyond impressed, tastes just like my favorite store bought brand. The ONLY thing I do differently is I like to give the onions a quick go in the blender, I have texture issues for some reason and can't exactly handle bites of solid onion in a smooth creamy dip. :

I did a few things differently - used bacon grease instead of olive oil for a fuller, smoky flavor. I used my own cultured cream (I used store buttermilk as the starter, let it go for 24 hours and left out the mayonnaise, using more cultured cream instead. Since the kids don't like onions I pureed them in the blender with half of the cultured cream after they had been caramelized. I'm shocked at how closely this resembles the best store french onion dip. It's delicious and we love it!

Compared to a mix, the only extra work is cooking the onions. But the taste is so worth it. I use a bag of frozen chopped onions which its enough for a double batch.

The best onion dip I have ever had. My whole family loves this onion dip. It will be served at holidays and any other gathering. It is also so easy to make. Great recipe Alton!

Hate to be repetitive, but this was SOOOOOOO good. First of MANY dips that were finished at the New Year's Eve party I went to. I used regular sour cream and low fat mayo. Next time (oh yes, there will be many "next times" I will try low fat sour cream and see if it tastes as good.

Very good. Everyone loved it at the Christmas party. Even tough critics. I received a request to make it for the next football game. Very creamy.
