Excellent dip. The only problem is that I had to wait overnight so the flavors would mingle. Aside from that, it is just outstanding. I'm not making the packaged stuff again!

I am now eating way too much of this. Last night Wife and I both had potlucks to prepare for, so I did a quad batch of this. The diners were blown away -- I have never had so many people ask for a recipe before!

The onion dip is easy and quick to make, however the length of time it takes for the flavors to merge and chill leaves something to be desired.

Took me 15 mins. prep time (slow chopper.Total time 35 mins. including clean up. 2 cups onions, 2 cups sour cream, 1/4 cup mayo, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1.25 tsps white pepper, 1 tsp onion powder. Watch onions - easy to burn if you don't. Will ruin it if burned. Quick and easy recipe. I will definitely do this instead of any other onion dip.

Alton is right: why would you ever, ever, ever buy store-bought dips? A bowl of this usually gets cleaned out in an hour tops. Then again...anything with sour cream and mayo AND onions can't be all that bad, right?

I've made this recipe twice now. Once I made it with vidalia onions and another time I made it with white onions. It was good both ways. This recipe is easy and delicious. Thanks Alton!

OK, in my biased opinion, if you do it my way, it'll be a perfect 5 star recipe. I followed suggestions from previous reviewers who had given this recipe less than a perfect review. I believe they were right. My proportions now are:
2-3 tablespoons olive oil
2 cups finely diced onions
? teaspoon salt
2 cups sour cream
? cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon onion salt
? teaspoon garlic powder
? teaspoon ground white pepper
Instead of regular salt going into the mix of the cold ingredients, I use onion salt. I do use regular salt for frying the onions. I always make it the day ahead to give the flavors a chance to "marry". Don't taste it right after you make it, you HAVE to let it rest. Taste the next day and only then adjust flavoring if need be.

Everyone at my party loved this stuff! Even the picky eater dipped in around the onions and raved! Very tasty. Makes a lot of dip!
