My husband and I saw this on a rerun of Good Eats. The very next day we went to the grocery store to grab the ingredients. He made a batch with cinnamon and raisins, and I made one the next night with cinnamon, dried cranberries, and dried blueberries. It was oatmeal perfection! I can't wait to try other variations of this recipe! Seriously, it's a fast, easy, hot breakfast, and a lot healthier than a lot of other fast breakfast options.

I've been eating this recipe for a few weeks now. I absolutely love it.I change up the ingredients from time to time, adding apples, cinnamon, raisins, etc.I haven't changed anything else in my diet except these oats and I've lost a few pounds.(pretty sure its from the large amounts of fiber combing out my system Plus, I'm not hungry for hours after breakfast now.If you use apples and cinnamon in with the oats and leave them to cook overnight you house will smell like apple pie when you wake up in the morning.Better than the smell of my morning coffee.

Just made this last night. It turned out great! Not too mushy (although oatmeal is going to be a little mushy and definitely not too watery. I cooked it in my Rival crock pot/slow cooker (same thing. It even says "crock pot/slow cooker" on the crock pot. I followed the recipe exactly except I didn't have half and half I used whipping cream (not the cool whip kind. I also only added the dried cranberries -no figs. I also added a half teaspoon vanilla and cinnamon. Yum yum! Super easy and so great to wake up to a cooked breakfast!! I'm going to try Alton's cook on the stove steel cut oatmeal next time and compare. Thanks for the easy and yummy recipe!

I made this last night. I used almond milk and water. No fruit since I had none on hand. I added cinnamon and bronw sugar, before cooking. It turned out wonderful. All the liquid was absorbed to perfection. Once in my bowl I added a little milk and splenda just like you would oatmeal. I will be taking my leftovers to work for lunch. Thanks Alton

I tried using a water bath to cut down on the number of dishes used. I tried dried mangos and blueberries instead of figs. For a quick start in the morning, it works really well.

I didn't have half and half so I reduced the water by 1/2 a cup and added 1 cup of whole milk. The result was a cream texture and bursting with flavors of the figs and cranberries. Because I am single, I was also curious how it would be the next day. I just popped it in the microwave for a couple minutes and it was still nice. You could add a little moisture in the form of water or milk if you want to thin the left-overs.

I love this recipe. It is so easy to make and easily varied by changing the dried fruits used. The texture is so much better than regular oatmeal; not nearly as mushy. And it doesn't need any extra sweetening. And I really love having breakfast ready to eat!

Worked out really great! I've made this a couple of times now, the last time with chopped dates and sliced apples... yum! It's a great, healthier alternative to over-sweetened instant oatmeal, and even quicker in the morning. One thing - you HAVE to use STEEL CUT OATS. Not old fashioned, and certainly not quick or instant. Just because it's in a canister doesn't make it steel cut! No mushiness here!

Delicious! I made this in a new-ish (~2 year old Crock-Pot brand slowcooker. It is a double slowcooker with two smaller pots - I'd say each one holds ~4 litres. I cooked over night (8 hrs on low, and it worked perfectly. I didn't have cranberries, so I subsituted one chopped apple instead, and I added 1/2 tsp of cinammon. I also greased the pot before cooking so it didn't stick. I chopped the figs into little pieces (the recipe didn't really say what to do. It was super yummy, and makes a great low-cost, nutritious meal that my family loved. So nice to wake up to a cooked breakfast!
