We like making this recipe when we have a house full of guests. Set it up the night before, and everyone can self-serve the next morning when they get up.

I've tried to make this recipe 3 times. The first time it burned, and the other times I experimented with more water, less cooking time, and no half-and-half. While I eventually achieved something edible, I still don't think it is extraordinary. But I LOVE the idea of waking up to breakfast, so I want to make this work. I have been trying this on my Rival oval-shaped 6-qt Smart Pot. Tonight I will try it on a new West Bend 3-qt one. Hopefully I won't burn the house down. :-

I love croakpot cooking, and my fiance hates oatmeal because it's too mushy. He tried this meal and boy was his idea of oatmeal changed! He loves it so much that we have to have it atleast once a month. Cream is good instead of half-and-half for a very rich breakfast that keeps you going!

My mom cooked this for my father and I and we thought it was great. I really like the texture and the flavor which is more intense than that of rolled oats. The cranberries sweeten it so much that you really don't have to add much sugar.

Easy and ready when you wake up. I substituted dried cherries and bluberries -- still great.

Best oatmeal EVER. One thing to note, I think Altons Crock Pot has a lower low than mine.
three to four hours was all we could cook without it boiling over or cooking dry.

Randy: Everyone's crockpots seems to be calibrated a little differently. It sounds like yours might cook faster than the norm. If you feel like trying the recipe again, you might want to try adding more water and/or cooking for less time. With my crockpot, I need to add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup more water if I'm going to cook the oatmeal for more than 9 hours. If I cook it for much longer and don't add the water, I get the same burning around the edges as you do. Sorry you had such bad luck with the recipe. Hope you give it another try, because it really does make delicious oatmeal.

This makes a delicious, hearty oatmeal that's a treat to wake up to - it's ready to eat with minimal effort. I didn't have figs so used prunes instead and cut back just a little on the amount of fruit. This recipe makes a lot of oatmeal, so scale it back according to your appetite.
