I have a newer, larg crock-pot - 6 qt - I think is the size. I followed other reviews for this size and it came out amazing. I doubled the recipe and put in a little cinnamon and vanilla extract and put it on low for about an hour and then switched to warm when I went to bed -- around 11:30. In the morning it was a little watery still so I switched it back to low for about 2 hours and it was absolutely perfect - not watery, no burning. I added dried cherries after it cooked. Will definitely make again.

Loved this recipe. And thanks to all the previous posts that commented on the year of your crockpot. I have a newer crock, and this cooked perfectly overnight on the warm setting. And rubbing the crock with oil before putting everything in helped alot with cleanup. I did use only a cup of dried fruit, but added canned pumpkin, chopped apples & walnuts. Used milk instead of half&half to make a little lighter. Absolutely delicious .. and nothing but health!

Let me start out by saying, I'm glad I read comments. I have an older 3 1/2 quart crock pot. I rubbed the inside of my crock down with a little oil before adding the oatmeal. I added the extra 1/2 cup of half & half and I used less dried fruit. IT WAS PERFECT!!! I also added some cut-up almonds and they were yummy. I used assorted dried tropical fruit, plus some currants. The currants are the only ones that really worked. The golden raisins turned back into grapes, which was o.k. The rest of the fruit disappeared, but added very nice flavor. I think I will try raisins and apples next time. I have enough left to reheat for the rest of the week. Just perfect!

You really need to correct the recipe. On the show he calls for an entire cup of regular cream, not half and half. Also he calls for only a cup and a half of fruit. Trying the way it is on this page, I have gotten it wrong every single time. The fruit sucks up alllllllllllll the moisture and by the morning it's a carmelized mess and not in the good way.

very good, very easy. Kids said it was not tasty enough for them so I added a little cinnamon and brown sugar and it was perfect. I also added apples and that really gave it a great sweetness.

I love steel cut oats, but can't seem to make then without it boiling over onto the stove. This is a perfect solution. I only used half the fruit which was plenty. I think any dried fruit would work. Also used skim milk in place of half and half. I used a 1 1/2 quart crock-put and it was almost full to the top. I think this kept it from burning. I stirred it once, but cooked about 8 hrs on low. Creamy and a little chewy. Yum.

Loved this - but need some help! As I don't love figs and cranberries and prefer my oatmeal to be flavored with apples, need a suggestion. I tried dried apple rings, but that really left it mushy and an off/chemical taste. Any suggestions for how I could modify this to get apples in there?

    1. I made this in my Rival Stoneware slow cooker crockpot purchased at least 20 - 25 years ago.
    2. I made this during the day so that I could watch it in case things started to go awry, as many other reviewers mentioned. I stirred it every couple of hours and had no burning or sticking issues.
    3. 8 hours and 10 minutes have now gone by--on low--and the oatmeal texture is perfect for me. Sort of crunchy/chewy. My only complaint is that it's still a little soupy. I'll cut back on the water just a bit for the next batch. That's my preference, and may not be yours.
    4. I didn't add fruit, but instead seasoned it with cinnamon, fresh grated nutmeg, vanilla, a little brown sugar, and 1T butter. I'll add fruit and nuts tomorrow morning for breakfast. Can't wait.
The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I didn't follow the recipe exactly. But, if you have an older crock pot and an 8 hour sleep cycle, I think this will work for you. Enjoy.

This is yummy and easy to make adjustments. Instead of figs, chopped apples are good. Try stirring in some maple syrup. Yummmm. Use all water instead of milk and it's still good! I have never had a problem with it burning. It could be because of the milk. I usually only use water.
