I like this way to make oatmeal! The figs were too much for me though. It didn't say to chop them, so i resisted my skepticism and threw in whole figs. Alas, it did prove to be too much. I shoulda chopped them.

But the taste and consistency of the oatmeal was great!

My crockpot has settings for low, high and warm. I put it on low for about an hour, then
to warm overnight. Back to low for a while in the morning.

It was wonderful! Thanks AB! I made a double batch and used raisins and cranberrys since that is what I had on hand. I have a new "Crock Pot" and set the heat to warm. In the morning it was a little soft so I turned it up to low while I showered...it was perfect. I think the reviews talking about the difference in heat settings between the new and older slow cookers are the reasons for failure. There was no problem with cleanup. Next time I will try without fruit...it was a little sweet for a couple of my children but they loved the texture and would like to doctor it up themselves.

I've read a ton of good and bad reviews that mean absolutely NOTHING because they don't list which slow cooker they are using. I wanted to write my review for my exact slow cooker. I used a 6-quart oval Crock-Pot Smart Pot. I doubled the recipe. I used dried cranberries, chunks of fresh apple, and milk instead of half and half. At 9:30 pm I set it to cook for 3 hours on low, then the Crock-Pot switched to warm for the remainder of the night. At 6:30 am, when we awoke, it was PERFECT. Just as if I had made it on the stove. The apples were tender, not mushy, The oats were still attractive, not brownish from the cranberries. No overcooked edges. No bad clean-up.

I'm not a big oatmeal fan but I was very intrigued by this recipe when i saw it on Good Eats. I followed the recipe to a T and left it in the slow cooker for 9 hours. The edges were slightly burned (so next time I will only do 8 hours but it still tasted good. It was very sweet and creamy, not as solid as i expected. It didn't have that instant oatmeal taste (which is a good thing. It didn't look appealing but it tasted very good!

I look forward to trying this. I first encountered a version of this from a venerated Swiss woman who years ago hired me at a cheese shop she ran. Among the many things she shared was her traditional take on muesli. Though it could be considered a unitasking tool, I considered it not a relic but a treasure. She had for decades been using an apple grater designed, patented and fabricated by Maximillian Bircher- Benner, specifically for his innovation of muesli.

5 very yummy stars!! I was worried about the edges burning like a few people described earlier. My solution was to put the crockpot on a timer for 8 hours and shut the crockpot off for a half an hour about halfway through cooking. I swapped half and half for skim milk and I cut back on the dried fruit (1 cup instead of 2. I used blueberry flavored cranberries, which sweetened the oatmeal perfectly. My only problem with this is I can't put my spoon down. This recipe set me back less than $4.93. I used all the fruit, but I have enough milk and oatmeal to make this at least 5 more times.

0 stars if it would let me, but 1 is as low as I am allowed. Too sweet to my taste (but then, I don't add sugar to regular oatmeal. Started it Friday night for Saturday breakfast - came down and first the smell hit me (cooking cranberries and cherries - somehow just didn't work. Ok, but I thought a perfumey sweet taste (used combo of cranberries and cherries - don't like figs or dates, but I'm still working to clean my slow cooker Sunday afternoon. I scrub a bit, soak a bit. Almost there. Will never cook this again - especially considering if you pour boiling water over the oats and let soak overnight, am almost done.

Very Good! We left out all the fruit. We will add some next time. Cook up fine. It was nice to wake up and have breakfast done!

Too much fig! It was way too crunchy and sweet with the figs. I recommend using something other than figs. I had it on low for 8 hrs. in my crock pot and the edges were baked on. I might try it again but this time w/o figs!

I used the reviewer suggested 4 C water with 1 C half & half (or milk. The crock pot is really the most challenging part of this recipe. Everything from your crock pots size, age and or temperature settings will effect; be it make or break how your oatmeal turns out. Be flexible and experiment! I used the warm setting and then had to finish it off on high in the morning. After a few trial runs you will have the recipe nailed down for use with your specific crock pot and it will be an easy, delicious and healthy breakfast staple. This recipe is similar to one I have from my great-grandfather who would soak the oatmeal with raisins overnight and then cook it in the morning.
