I was really excited to see this recipe from Alton Brown, because he's my favorite person to watch on Food Network. I have a large crock pot, so I decided to double the recipe. Also, I only used water and 1% milk instead of half and half. I mixed all of the ingredients around 9:30-10:00pm, and I woke the next morning at 8:15am to find it cooked quite well (after stirring. It was a little burned around the edges, but it still came out really well and i've got enough to last me the rest of the week. This is a great and easy recipe, and I seasoned mine with brown sugar, raisins, and cranberries.

I fell asleep before assembling last night, so had to improvise. I heated the water in an electric kettle, doubled the recipe, cooked for an hour in the slow cooker on high, and it's lovely.

I used raisins and dried cranberries because that's what I had on hand, set my crockpot on "warm" overnight. Early the next morning I noticed that it hadn't thickened quite as much as I'd like so I then cranked it up to Low for about an hour. Perfect! The whole family raved about it. This recipe will definitely be a regular at my house!

    Thanks, Alton!

I love Alton Brown's recipes, but this one did not work. It was burned on the bottom and edges, and still soupy. I used dried cherries instead of the figs, but I don't think this can account for the nasty outcome.

This was so easy and was perfect for if you are in a hurry in the morning. It used nonfat milk instead and used 1 cup of crazins. It did not stick at all for me and I did it for 9 hours. I have an old crock pot so that may be what it is. All I can say is thanks AB. This was great and left overs will be nice for the weekend.

I've had such great luck with Altons recipes in the past, that I didn't think to read the reviews. Too bad for me. 9 hours is far too long and doubling the recipe may have contributed to it's demise as well. It's so stuck on the sides that it can't be salvaged. User reviews are the key to any successful online recipe!!

I need to make oatmeal for a work breakfast tomorrow. How can I multiply this recipe for closer to 20 people? Is it possible? I have a rice cooker and a crock pot, but my rice cooker doesn't have a porridge setting. I have read on different sites' recipes that mutiplying the recipe can be disastrous. Has anyone tried a larger batch?

I've had a box of steel cut oats sitting in my pantry for ages that I kept meaning to make, but never really got around to using. I never had time for stovetop cooking and this was the perfect solution!

I used a 1.5 liter crockpot and cooked the oats for 8 hours. This was the perfect amount of time because as I was scooping them out they began to stick to the side. I had dried cranberries, but no dates and it turned out just fine. I think this recipe would work well with any dried fruit. It needed a little extra sweetness and flavor so I added a scoop of vanilla protein powder and it added a nice taste as well as some extra nutrients. I'll definitely be making this one again! Thanks Alton!

I make a pot of this on Sunday night and divide it up in to microwavable bowls for the week. Grab and go to work! I use an extra 1/2-3/4 cup of water and a couple of spoonfuls of brown sugar and a few sprinkles of cinnamon. 6-7 hours does it on low. Thanks Alton...I can always count on you!

Tried this for my family and was surprised it didn't burn in my older crockpot.
( based on other reviews. Set it on low and it ran for 7 hours. It was a bit runnier than I had hoped but it solidified as it cooled. I may try it in my rice cooker next time, I liked it less soft! I always hated oatmeal cause of the slimy texture, but steel cut oats have much better texture. It was reddish brown from the dried cranberries I used and the cinnamon, I didn't add the cream to the pot instead I added some fat free half and half to the servings.
