So what I do is just dump all the ingredients in my http://www.brownricecookersite.com>rice cooker</a > and set the mode to porridge, and timer for 6am and I am done. Time elapsed...30 seconds maybe.

I am pretty clumsy at 6am so removing the cooking step from that function makes my morning all that much smoother.

    Great recipe!

There are a few differences in the recipe on the actual show vs the website as others have pointed out. Most people burnt their oats - so I went with the cup of half and half recommended in the episode, as well as the half cup less dried fruit. I started it at 11 and woke up at 4... it was already starting to stick to the sides.. so I turned it from low to warm. I think next time I'll leave it on warm all night. I also want to try blueberries instead of the raisins and cranberries I used.

Our Company started a health awareness program and I love to cook! Deciding that breakfast would be good on a cold, rainy day and knowing the co-workers would not eat anything unhealthy, I researched and decided to do Alton's recipe. Simple, straight-forward, not a lot of fancy stuff. Did not use the fruit, tripled the recipe, decreased the liquid by 1/2 cup per 1 cup of oats, used skim milk instead of the 1/2 and 1/2, added about a tsp of salt, and put it in my programmable crock pot for 10 hrs. Only cooked it 7 hrs and let it set for an hour and it was perfectly done. Creamy, but still had texture. Set up an oatmeal bar with maple syrup, honey, cinnamon, walnuts, dried fruits, brown sugar, 1% milk, and butter. Made a fresh fruit tray and had lite English muffins and light bagels. IT WAS A HUGE HIT WITH EVERYONE!!!!

This is the best and easiest oatmeal I have ever made. After reading many of the reviews I settled on low heat (no warm on my old crock pot 4 cups water; 1 cup1% milk; cinnamon and a handful of raisins. Cooked about 7 hours and woke up to perfection. Thanks Alton!

I started this last night before going to bed, cooking time was about 8 hours, I should have gotten up at 3 AM when I smelled the aroma and turned the crockpot off. That was after 5 hours. When I finally got up and went to get a bowl I found the edges very, very crusty and burned, same for the bottom. Obviously I have one of those crock pots which runs at a higher temp when set on low - don't have a warm setting. Having said all that, I enjoyed the oatmeal; I doubled the recipe so there would be breakfast for the week, added dried apricots, dried blueberries and dried cranberries. What I will do next time is to cook it during the day, keeping an eye on it, and I'm sure it will be even better that this first attempt.

I prefer my oatmeal plain, without sugar or 'creaminess', so I'd eliminate the dried fruit and put a handful of raisins instead. I like it nice and thick without any sugar or milk.

Did anyone else notice on the show Alton Brown uses 1/2 cup dried figs and 1 cup of cream? Here the recipe calls for 1 cup dried figs and 1/2 cup of half and half. Has anyone burned it using the recipe from the show?

The Oatmeal Turned out perfect, made a batch last night. I made a few adjustments, I have a Hamilton Beach crock pot, cooked it on ?WARM? for 9 hours and it was cooked to perfection. I also substituted 1/2 C. of golden raisin and 1/2 C of prunes for the figs.

A few years ago, someone decided that crockpots (aka slowcookers cooked food too slowly and were a potential "danger" to their users, thus they made them with a higher temp and they take a much, much shorter time to cook things than the older ones. So, those of us with much older crockpots (mine are circa 1992 & 1995 have the ones that cook nice and slow - thus ensuring the recipe will not burn. Those with the newer ones need to use the idea that someone else suggested with the bowl set in water within the crockpot and put your oats to cook in the bowl. It will act as an insulator. HTH!

Alton, thanks for taking the mystery out of irish oats. I used a small 3 qt slow cooker. I used 1/2 cup of steel oats and added 1/2 cup of dried cranberries. 2 Cups of filtered water and 1/4 cup of Silk Vanilla Soy Milk. I mixed it up in the slow cooker and set on low for 4 hrs. Perfect. Coated with brown sugar when its done, YUM! My husband is going to love it. Thanks, this is much easier than the stovetop.
