I made these for the first time and I am hooked! I substituted the eggs for egg beaters and it turned out great! I will continue to use this recipe and try different fruits, this time I used cherries and apricots(which resulted in a delicious combo. This is so much more affordable and takes very little time.

If you're looking for a tasty treat, keep looking. But if you're looking for a high protein snack that will satisfy your hunger for far less than a PowerBar costs, then give this recipe a try.

I made this recipe for the first time tonight. I substituted an equal amount of natural raw sugar for the brown sugar, and added a half cup of honey. I also added 3oz of ground flax seeds (which is why I figured I could get away with the extra moisture from the honey. I wasn't able to get the plain soy protien powder... used "Any Whey" whey powder for baking with good results. I am anxious to try out some different additives... or special flavors like apple/cinnamon. Yay for you Alton!!!

I loved my store-bought protein bars. After seeing this show, I checked the ingredients. I didn't recognize some, but I did see Palm Oil and Hydrolized Collagen. Yuck; extracted from cow hooves. I looked it up, it's true!!

I make these weekly now instead. Actually, twice a week. One batch doesn't last a whole week. But, that's okay. I've gotten really good at making each batch really fast. It was expensive the first batch, but I'm really getting to use all the products (finally a reason to use a whole bag of whole wheat flour.

Substitutions I made: I wanted more texture, so I substituted the oat bran for Steel Cut Oatmeal. Dr. Oz says they are good for me. Instead of all the fruits, I used just raisins and added carrots and cinnamon, with some pecans. (My version of a healthy carrot cake. I also substituted the dark brown sugar for Splenda's Brown Sugar blend; for half the carbs and sugar count. Lastly, I added two tablespoons of flax oil on my second batch and noted it didn't affect the consistency with the extra small amount of liquid. Flax Oil is so good for you, and you can't taste it. I always try to find ways to use it.

Next batch, I'll be using mashed bananas instead of raisins, and nutmeg and vanilla extract for my healthy banana bread protein bars.

This is an exceptional recipe because the only sugar is what's in the dried fruit and apple juice - I made a batch and they're my breakfast. I substituted dried papaya, dates, apricots and cranberries for the suggested dried fruits, and added pecans and sunflower seeds. Delicious and nutritious!

I made these bars without weighing ingredients, and they turned out fine. i substituted mini chocolate chips for all of the fruit, since i eat plenty of fruit and the dried ones are expensive. i also used regular apple juice. the only change i would make is to add more salt next time, and i might try adding some walnuts or pecans for crunch.

How did those of you who modified the recipe to increase the protein do it?

I too would like more protein (closer to the 20 grams I get in the Think protein bar.

Aso, thank you to the poster who recommended fresh nutmeg and cinnamon; the bit of nutmeg especially makes a big flavor difference.

Next time I also plan to add vanilla or almond extract. It's a tiny bit of extra liquid, but I can take out a a half-teaspoon of the apple juice to make up for it.

Also, I agree that almond butter (fresh from the natural foods store is superior to peanut butter.

I'm going to use part barley flour next time.
