We love this recipe. This time we did half beef and half lamb. We use more rosemary and thyme than stated in the recipe and added garlic to the mashed potatoes. YUM!!.

Made this last night. I love lamb, but still found this a bit over powering. I added extra garlic just because my family loves it. Also increased the amount of tomato paste. Did my own thing with the mashed potatoes but added the egg yolk. It really made the potatoes fluff up when baked. Love Alton. Think I might try with beef. BTW: my husband loved this!

It's awesome. A go to recipe for me and one of the first ones I learned to make. Nice job Alton.

Quite tasty!
But I thought it was "peppered with actual shepherd on top!" ;-

I tweaked this a little to make it more kid friendly, but it was delicious. I substituted ground beef and pork for lamb and left out peas because I forgot to buy them. Also I did my own thing with the mashed potatoes, but used Alton's recipie as a guide. I also used beef stock rather than chicken. My family LOVED it. Don't make the mistake of using a 9x13 pan like I did, the potatoes were too thick on top and the delicious meat was a bit too thin on the bottom. I will definitely make this again- lots of possibilities to play with it and customize it for your family.

So yummy! I made it vegetarian with the TVP crumbles in place of the lamb and a package of lipton onion soup (prepared as directed in place of the chicken broth. I used dried herbs and it was still delicious. Next time I'll try lentils in place of the lamb. My entire family hates mushrooms except me so maybe I'll just make a mushroom pie instead and not share!!!

Absolutely delicious! I also used beef since I don't care for lamb. But don't skip on the fresh herbs - they completely make the dish. Complete game changer!

AMAZING! Substituted 1/2 of the lamb with lean ground beef to reduce fat. Even my toddler who doesn't normally eat meat could not get enough! Really delicious.

excellent Shepherds Pie, I substituted baby portabella mushrooms for the corn and peas, and totally forgot the tomato paste but almost couldnt keep my daughter out of the mix before i had it all together! So its still a hit and i think the portabella gives it more flavor, also substituted beefstock for the chicken stock as its what i had on hand that i could readily find.
