This recipe was so yummy! My children loved it! One child went back for thirds! My mom used to make this, but shhhh don't tell her this is so much better than hers. We are recovering from hurricane Sandy and were limited on some things. I didn't have lamb so I used ground beef. I also didn't have tomato paste. I had diced tomatoes on had, so I used them instead. I browned the tomatoes well hoping to get some good flavor. This recipe will now be in our recipe rotation! Thanks Alton! So worth the extra effort!

There is no need for another Shepherd's pie recipe. Watching this episode on Good Eats was enough to make me get the ingredients (and cheat on my diet and get this in the oven. The addition of the egg in the potatoes was foreign to me but it makes total sense. The potatoes were delicious and the meat mixture was so tender and flavorful. LOVE!

YUM! Made some alterations: ground turkey meat instead (but can't wait to try it with lamb, whole wheat flour, chicken broth thawed from freezer, 2-3x the carrots, no corn. Thawed and coarsely chopped lima beans (didn't have any peas...but I like this better - something more to chew. Also added sliced cherry tomatoes just before spreading mixture into glass dish. I would suggest about 7-8 small/medium potatoes. I'd never put a egg yolk in mashed potatoes but I think it works really well in this dish, omitted the cheese. Be sure to salt and pepper to your liking and taste it before you spread it out, so you can season properly. Didn't use a lot of butter, so added a drizzle of olive oil to yummy it up. TIP: after baking for 25 minutes, broil it on the middle oven rack for about 4 minutes. Wow it was so scrumptious - the best part. It was like having a layer of crispy hashbrowns on top (be sure make the wonderful ridges before baking. Thanks Alton, you never let us down!

Made this last night and it's the best Shepard's Pie I've ever had!!!! My ten year old and two year old, both picky eaters, ate it up. In fact, I'll be enjoying this for lunch today as well.

This is hands down when of the best recipes I have made from a Food Network star! My family devours this meal every time I make. Well worth the time it takes to prepare. I add about 3/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese to the mashed potato topping to give it an added little surprise and color. This recipe is a winner!

I've made it several times... and it seems to get better and better! I've always followed the recipe exactly, but made a few changes the last time to make it grain-free. Just substituted potato starch for the wheat flour and omitted the corn. Fantastic still! I've been asked by friends to pass this one on.
