My original plan tonight was to make a shepherd's pie using jarred gravy. I'm so glad the supermarket was out of the "good" gravy, prompting me to see what Alton had to offer. No comparison -- I'll never cheat on shepherd's pie again!

My go-to recipe for shepherd's pie, though I never follow a recipe all the way through. Most recently I substituted beef for the lamb, and added rutabaga and turnip to my mashed potatoes. Use plenty of tomato paste and worcestershire sauce for flavor and taste both of your components before putting it together. Cheese is optional; salt is not.

Our families favorite! The sweet lamb adds a whole new flavor (for those that sub ground beef - it changes the flavor entirely… lamb is sweet tasting! I skip the tomato paste and instead of using chicken broth - I just use water. Yum Yum!

I really liked this recipe, however I think I would use a few more potatoes the next time I make it, from talking with friends who have made shepherd's pie, you can never use to much potatoes. Otherwise, this is the very first recipe that I made being only 20 years old and trying to learn how to cook on my own.. I think it turned out very well.

Love it! This is my favorite way to make shepherd's pie. The only change i make is I always use ground beef alone, since my family doesn't always like the taste of lamb.

I made this recipe and had all my in-laws over for dinner the other night. It was such a hit and everybody including myself loved it!!! My sister in-law liked it so much that she even asked for the recipe. I will definitely make this dish over and over again until it becomes a tradition in my family. Next time, I will try using ground beef. Loved it... super delish!!!

Made it with ground turkey since one family member doesn't eat red meat, but it was still awesome! Used more butter in the potatoes and free handed the seasoning. Great comfort food for the winter.

I love Alton. But NEVER should a shepherds pie have corn in it. I left them out, but so untraditional. Good recipe however!

This recipe was amazing. I loved it. I have only made it 2 times because it is a lot of WORK!! And it takes a lot of time to cook. When I put it in the oven the juice on on side came out and spilled all over the oven! It made enough for 4 people and still had left overs. This one is a hit!
